Obama, Romney pursue divergent ad strategies

A new TV ad featuring former President Bill Clinton is the latest evidence of a deliberate and potentially risky advertising strategy by the Obama campaign to blitz airwaves with its strongest material months before the general election.

President Barack Obama's campaign is hoping to inoculate itself from what's expected to come: a barrage of commercials from Mitt Romney and Republican independent groups in the fall.

In Obama's latest ad, Clinton endorses the president and his economic policies. It's slated to air in eight battleground states, timed to run right before the Republican National Convention begins next week. The ad is the culmination of an approach Obama's team has followed since Romney became the all but certain GOP nominee in April. The Obama campaign's goal has been to present the former Massachusetts governor as an unacceptable alternative, despite the weak economic recovery and stubbornly high unemployment throughout the president's tenure.

"If you look at the ad pattern, the Obama campaign sees it as a seven-month run and the Romney campaign sees it as a three-month sprint. Everything we're seeing points to that," Elizabeth Wilner, vice president for Kantar/Campaign Media Analysis Group, said. "It's a gamble for both sides, and whoever is right will win."

Ad spending is expected to hit $1.1 billion in the 2012 presidential contest. About one-third of that has already been spent, according to Kantar/CMAG, which tracks campaign ads.

The spending reflects the divergent ad strategies from the Obama and Romney teams. Obama's campaign has frontloaded its ads throughout the spring and summer, seeking to define Romney. The Romney campaign and groups affiliated with it have only recently caught up and exceeded the Obama campaign's spending. Romney and his allies are focusing the bulk of their advertising efforts on the weeks closer to the general election. They hope to capitalize on a successful convention and heightened interest from voters.

The Obama campaign's decision to roll out Clinton now, rather than closer to the election, reflects a calculation that his endorsement will carry more weight than when the airwaves are fully saturated.

"The Republican plan is to cut more taxes on upper-income people and go back to deregulation. That's what got us in trouble in the first place," Clinton says in the ad, set to air in New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.

Obama, Clinton says, will help rebuild the middle class if re-elected. "That's what happened when I was president," Clinton says.

So far, Obama's campaign has spent $130 million on advertising, compared to about $70 million for Romney. But a trio of Republican-leaning outside groups has spent about $100 million on ads supporting Romney. That's allowed the candidate to remain competitive in ad spending and even exceed the Obama campaign in recent weeks. And when Romney officially becomes his party's nominee next week, he'll be free to spend millions more in money designated specifically for the general election.

Anticipating the ad spending disadvantage, the Obama campaign began its general election ad buys in mid-April.

A barrage of ads hitting Bain Capital, the venture firm where Romney made millions, was released in early May. The ads depicted Romney as a corporate raider who had bankrupted companies and laid-off workers ? an effort to undermine his contention that his experience as a businessman makes him more qualified than Obama to fix the economy. A series of spots criticizing Romney's record as Massachusetts governor quickly followed.

A pro-Obama independent group, Priorities USA Action, was also on the air in the spring with ads slamming Romney's record at Bain. But the group has struggled to raise money and hasn't provided the level of help Romney is getting from allied independent groups.

Romney ceded much of the spring and early summer to those organizations ? Restore Our Future, an independent group formed by former staffers, and to American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, which are tied to former President George W. Bush's longtime political counselor Karl Rove. The groups have run ads hammering Obama on the economy, the stimulus plan and the health care overhaul.

Romney's campaign has ramped up more recently, airing ads that mostly criticize Obama rather than promoting the GOP presidential hopeful. Romney's campaign received a big assist earlier this month from Americans For Prosperity, an independent group backed by the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, which launched a $25 million ad campaign featuring voters who supported Obama in 2008 but plan to vote against him this time.

No state has seen more advertising than Ohio, where Obama and Republicans have spent nearly $100 million to date. Florida places a close second, while Virginia is third.

Wilner said that despite the Republican cash advantage going into the fall, the level of ad saturation in the battleground states thus far may make it difficult for Romney and his allies to gain significant new traction.

"For Obama, summer time may have proven to be a better time to get a message across than in the fall. Republicans are hoping sheer tonnage of ads will be enough to convince voters not to give another term," Wilner said.

San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Helping Those Injured in Two ...

Although most people think of Southern California and visualize
10-lane roads packed with traffic, the fact of the matter is that
motorists in and around San Diego do not have to go far to find
themselves in a two-lane highway driving environment. These roads tend
to offer much in the way of beauty and scenery to those who use them,
but they also present a unique set of challenges and risks to anyone who
is on them at any given time. Unfortunately, disastrous California car accidents tend to occur on these types of roads at an alarming rate.

Below you will find a brief overview regarding the dangers presented
by driving on a two-lane highway. You will also find information
regarding the ways in which people can make disastrous mistakes while
dealing with these driving environments as well as information regarding
the potential damages that could be recovered by someone who has been
wrongfully harmed in this manner. Anyone who has been injured on a
two-lane highway needs to obtain the help of San Diego personal injury lawyers as soon as possible.

Two-Lane Highways and the Dangers Involved

When people drive on two-lane highways, they are often in a
relatively rural environment. Therefore, one of the most obvious dangers
presented involves the lack of infrastructure and help if someone is
injured in an accident. It is not uncommon for people to have to wait
for an extended period of time for rescue workers to arrive on the scene
after a crash. This time lapse can make the difference between minor
and major injuries as well as between life and death.

Another danger involved with two-lane highway crashes involves the
possibility that other vehicles could be in the area at the time a crash
occurs. Two-lane roads are often squeezed between such natural barriers
as mountains and canyons, and when a crash occurs in this environment
other vehicles simply have nowhere to go to avoid a crash. That?s why
secondary crashes can occur.

Finally, the biggest danger and most common mistake made in a
two-lane highway environment involves one motorist attempting to pass
another. This is a decision that must involve impeccable judgment, as
any mistake made in this regard can instantly lead to a disastrous crash
that can involve vehicles coming in the other direction and/or vehicles
that are being passed at the time the crash occurs.

How San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Can Help

When someone is badly injured or worse in a California car accident
that occurs on a two-lane road, it often gives rise to a situation
where that injured person can and does file a California personal injury
lawsuit. When such a claim is filed and pursued, it could lead to an
award of damages that compensates the plaintiff for his or her losses.

However, this step is one that should be taken with the help of
experienced professionals who understand what it takes to hold those
responsible for this type of harm accountable. If this has happened to
you or someone you love, contact the San Diego personal injury lawyers at the Mitchell | Gilleon Law Firm today to schedule a free initial consultation.

The Importance of an Umbrella Policy | - Wholesale Insurance

When it comes to auto and homeowner?s insurance, there are several details the average policy holder ignores. For instance, most people believe that the simple fact of having these two policies will completely protect them against any unexpected liability.

The truth is that every liability coverage has its limit: some are high enough to provide fair protection, while others are considerably lower and may hold the insured responsible for liability exceeding the amount established in their policy.

Umbrella policies are useful in the event of a lawsuit or liability judgment, especially when the auto or home liability coverage does not cover it, or the limits have been reached. These policies can be made to protect the insured against claims due to damage or injury occurred in their home and/or claims due to damage or injury caused to a third person or its property. Umbrella policies can also cover legal and defense fees.

Usually, the liability coverage for an umbrella policy is about $1 million, with premiums averaging a couple of hundred a year. It is recommendable to shop for umbrella policies online in order to compare prices from one insurance company to another. Bundling services is also advised as they often come with discounts.

At RSI, a managing general agency, we offer umbrella policies and all type of insurance your insured needs. Visit our website or contact us to find out more about our products and services.

Audyssey Wireless Speakers

By Tim Gideon

Audyssey's latest offering will look familiar to some?it's a wireless Bluetooth stereo speaker set that is more or less an update of a previous Audyssey wired speaker pair. At $299.95, the simply named Wireless Speakers are significantly more expensive than their older sibling, the Audyssey Media Speakers. The wireless version offers an easy pairing process with your Bluetooth sound source, and can also be used as a wired pair with PCs and mobile devices. The audio performance is similar to the Media Speakers, as well?quality bass response and crisp highs, but with some distortion at maximum volumes on deep bass tracks.

Design
The Wireless Speakers have a spare, visually-pleasing design, with a white housing, black cloth grilles, and some black border accents. The look is minimalist and classy, with a hint of Space Age-feel. As mentioned above, visually, the Audyssey Wireless Speakers look virtually identical to the Audyssey Media Speakers, n?e the Lower East Side Media Speakers, which we reviewed in 2011. They certainly do not pack the overbearing flare of another recently reviewed Bluetooth stereo speaker set, the horn shaped Edifier Spinnaker, but it's nice to see two new sets of honest-to-goodness stereo speakers, instead of docks that can't muster even close to the stereo image both of these systems can. Audyssey Wireless Speaker rear view

Both speakers measure 9 by 4.9 by 6.8-inches, with the passive left speaker connecting to the right speaker via traditional speaker cable. The only other connections are on the active right speaker's back panel?one for the included power supply, and a 3.5mm Aux input, as well. The non-removable grilles covering the front panels hide a 0.75-inch tweeter and a 3-inch woofer, while the back panel of each speaker houses a 4-inch passive bass radiator, which aids in low frequency performance. A Volume/Power knob is situated on the lower portion of the right speaker's front panel, as well as a 3.5 headphone jack and a power LED (green is On, red is Standby).

The built-in speaker stands are a great design feature; They angle the drivers slightly upward and give them a little extra height. If you're using the Wireless Speakers on a desktop, they'll be more or less perfectly angled towards your ears, which is often not the case for desktop systems.

The worst aspect is the lack of a remote control. At $300, it seems like a cheap exclusion. True, you can use your sound source as the remote when streaming via Bluetooth, but that's not the case when using a wired sound source, like a PC. A 3.5 aux cable is included with the system.

The Wireless Speakers support Bluetooth A2DP, and the pairing process is simple and quick.

Performance
The sound signature for the Audyssey Wireless speaker system is a quite pleasant one at moderate to high volumes, with a smooth, but never overpowering, bass response, and an emphasis on clarity in the high-mids. On deep bass tracks at maximum volume, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the Wireless Speakers begin to noticeably distort and digital signal processing (DSP) seems to kick in, thinning out the bass a bit. At more moderate levels, they convey much more accurate bass response?even on deep electronic drum kicks like the one in the aforementioned Knife track?with a satisfying fullness that is neither thunderous nor meek. Regardless, the DSP will turn off some audio purists.

On instrumental tracks, like John Adams' modern classical piece, "The Chairman Dances," the low mids and high mids take center stage, giving things a crisp edge with a rounded out low-end. Lower register strings are not ignored, however, and add a nice, subtle depth to the mix, while high, wooden percussion hits sit nicely in the background. At least on this particular track, the brass section, with its insistent trombones, owns the space. If the overall depth of the low-end and sense of space is not as strong as it is on the aforementioned Edifier Spinnaker, the Wireless Speakers will still appeal to those who favor a crisp response over one with more emphasis on bass.

For $300, the Audyssey Wireless Speakers seem a tad overpriced. There's no remote, as we mentioned, and there is some distortion, which shouldn't really happen in this price range. None of this, however, detracts from the fact that at moderate to reasonably-high volume levels, the Wireless Speakers are a solid choice for Bluetooth streaming, with a simple design and a crisp response.

If both the Spinnaker and the Audyssey speakers are out of your budget, consider the portable IRiver Blank Sound Donut, a much smaller and far less expensive Bluetooth speaker with calling abilities. If you prefer a Bluetooth docking system, the JBL OnBeat Xtreme is not less expensive, but does hold our current Editors' Choice for wireless systems. And if you couldn't care less about wireless audio and just want a quality, affordable PC speaker system, you can't go wrong with the Harman Kardon SoundSticks III, another Editors' Choice winner that delivers excellent audio response for the price.

Sleep improves memory in people with Parkinson's disease

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

People with Parkinson's disease performed markedly better on a test of working memory after a night's sleep, and sleep disorders can interfere with that benefit, researchers have shown.

While the classic symptoms of Parkinson's disease include tremors and slow movements, Parkinson's can also affect someone's memory, including "working memory." Working memory is defined as the ability to temporarily store and manipulate information, rather than simply repeat it. The use of working memory is important in planning, problem solving and independent living.

The findings underline the importance of addressing sleep disorders in the care of patients with Parkinson's, and indicate that working memory capacity in patients with Parkinson's potentially can be improved with training. The results also have implications for the biology of sleep and memory.

The results were published this week in the journal Brain.

"It was known already that sleep is beneficial for memory, but here, we've been able to analyze what aspects of sleep are required for the improvements in working memory performance," says postdoctoral fellow Michael Scullin, who is the first author of the paper. The senior author is Donald Bliwise, professor of neurology at Emory University School of Medicine.

The performance boost from sleep was linked with the amount of slow wave sleep, or the deepest stage of sleep. Several research groups have reported that slow wave sleep is important for synaptic plasticity, the ability of brain cells to reorganize and make new connections.

Sleep apnea, the disruption of sleep caused by obstruction of the airway, interfered with sleep's effects on memory. Study participants who showed signs of sleep apnea, if it was severe enough to lower their blood oxygen levels for more than five minutes, did not see a working memory test boost.

In this study, participants took a "digit span test," in which they had to repeat a list of numbers forward and backward. The test was conducted in an escalating fashion: the list grows incrementally until someone makes a mistake. Participants took the digit span test eight times during a 48-hour period, four during the first day and four during the second. In between, they slept.

Repeating numbers in the original order is a test of short-term memory, while repeating the numbers in reverse order is a test of working memory.

"Repeating the list in reverse order requires some effort to manipulate the numbers, not just spit them back out again," Scullin says. "It's also a purely verbal test, which is important when working with a population that may have motor impairments."

54 study participants had Parkinson's disease, and 10 had dementia with Lewy bodies: a more advanced condition, where patients may have hallucinations or fluctuating cognition as well as motor symptoms. Those who had dementia with Lewy bodies saw no working memory boost from the night's rest. As expected, their baseline level of performance was lower than the Parkinson's group.

Participants with Parkinson's who were taking dopamine-enhancing medications saw their performance on the digit span test jump up between the fourth and fifth test. On average, they could remember one more number backwards. The ability to repeat numbers backward improved, even though the ability to repeat numbers forward did not.

Patients needed to be taking dopamine-enhancing medications to see the most performance benefit from sleep. Patients not taking dopamine medications, even though they had generally had Parkinson's for less time, did not experience as much of a performance benefit. This may reflect a role for dopamine, an important neurotransmitter, in memory.

Scullin and Bliwise are planning an expanded study of sleep and working memory, in healthy elderly people as well as patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

"Many elderly people go through a decline in how much slow wave sleep they experience, and this may be a significant contributor to working memory difficulties," Scullin says.

It is hoped that the results from this research will help constrain models of planet formation and lead to a better understanding of where, when, and how often planets form. Chris is also passionate about astronomy outreach and education and will talk for hours about the Universe if you let him.

Transcript:

Hello, this is Christopher Crockett from Lowell Observatory.

The North Star, Polaris, has long served as a beacon to navigators and astronomers. Its apparent fixed position in the sky acts as a guidepost ? a reference from which we can chart a path over an ocean or across the heavens. Owing to its lighthouse legacy, it is commonly assumed that Polaris is the brightest star in the sky when, in fact, it?s the 48th brightest as seen from Earth. It is, however, the brightest star in the constellation Ursa Minor (known to many as The Little Dipper). To find Polaris you first have to find the Big Dipper whose seven stars stand out brilliantly in northern skies making it easily recognizable. In January, the Big Dipper sits low on the northern horizon in early evening. The two stars on the edge of the dipper?s ?cup? furthest from the dipper?s handle are often called the ?pointer stars? because if you draw a line through them up out of the top of the cup, you?ll find that they point to a third star roughly three hand widths away. They point right at the North Star!

Having a star that so thoughtfully points us north is clearly very helpful. But how does it work? How does this one star manage to stay put while every other star glides across the sky in great celestial arcs? Well, remember that the apparent motion of the stars during the night is due to the rotating Earth. As the Earth spins on its axis, our view of the heavens changes over the course of a night. Polaris, however, happens to be nearly aligned with the axis of our planet. It?s not exact, but it?s pretty close. If you were to travel to the North Pole and look straight up, Polaris would be right over your head. Because of that, it?s near one of only two positions in the sky that doesn?t appear to move over the course of a night (see if you can guess where the second position is located). This star?s unique location relative to the Earth means it always appears in the same place in the Northern Sky.

But Polaris has another trick up its sleeve. If you were to measure the angle between the North Star and the horizon, you?d find that it perfectly matches your latitude! Go ahead and try it! If you live in, say, Boston, which sits roughly at 42 degrees north latitude, you?d find that Polaris sits 42 degrees above the horizon. Here in Flagstaff, the North Star hovers closer to 35 degrees off the horizon. The further south you travel, the lower in the sky Polaris will appear. At the equator, it sits right on the horizon. Travel any further south, and Polaris disappears behind the curvature of the Earth.

But as steady as it seems, Polaris hasn?t always been, and won?t always be, our North Star. Which star we call the ?North Star? changes over the millennia and there are times when there is no North Star at all. This has less to do with the stars themselves and more to do with the motion of the Earth.

If you?ve ever spun a top, what happens? Sure it spins around, but what else? Try it, and you?ll notice that the top not only spins, but it also wobbles. And just like a spinning top, the Earth wobbles. Astronomers use a fancy word for this: we call it precession. However the precession of the Earth is painfully slow to human observers: it takes 26,000 years for the Earth to complete one wobble. What this means is that over the course of these 26,000 years, where the North Pole points in the sky changes. In fact, it slowly traces out a circle in the sky, returning to the same point every 26,000 years. Over the course of the millennia, the North Pole points towards different stars, and sometimes to none at all. When the Egyptians were building the Great Pyramid, they didn?t look to Polaris to find north; they used a star in the constellation Draco called Thuban. 12,000 years from now, Vega, one of the brilliant stars in the Summer Triangle, will take the mantel of North Star.

Polaris is more than just a useful tool; it?s also a fascinating place in its own right. Located 430 light years from the Earth, Polaris is actually the brightest star in a triple star system ? three stars gravitationally bound together, circling one another in an endless cosmic ballet. The star closest to Polaris in this system is about as far from Polaris as the planet Uranus is from our own Sun; the other star is about 130 times further out still!

Polaris itself is a bright hot supergiant, about 30 times larger than our Sun while putting out as much energy as over 2000 Suns every second. And while you may never have noticed, its brightness fluctuates over a four-day period, earning Polaris a classification as a ?variable star?. These fluctuations, typical of aging stars, are driven by instabilities deep in the stellar interior that cause the star?s outer layers to repeatedly expand and contract as if it were breathing heavily. What?s more, Polaris is of a special family of variable stars called ?Cepheid variables?. Cepheids are stars whose frequency of variability is determined by their brightness. This simple fact has a rather remarkable consequence: if you can find a Cepheid variable and measure the period of its fluctuations, you can calculate how bright it should be. Then you can measure how bright it appears to us here on Earth and use the difference to determine the distance to the star. Using this technique, Edwin Hubble, in the 1920s, was able to make the first accurate measurements to the distances of other galaxies and in turn revealed the expanding Universe. Stars like Polaris led to one of the most unexpected and profound discoveries of the past century!

So be sure to go out tonight and see if you can find Polaris. It?s relatively straightforward to do and a great way to start familiarizing yourself with the night sky. Once you?ve found it, you?ll be continuing in a tradition that helped our ancestors chart their way across treacherous oceans and continues to light the way through an ever-surprising Universe.

My Soul Delighteth: Entertaining Angels Unawares

Note: This post was originally published on December 6, 2010. We went thought all the licensing work (classes, training, background checks, home studies, etc) but ended up housing others who needed a place to live - first a disabled vet and her kids for a few months, and then my sister and brother-in-law for a few weeks while they transitioned to the East coast, and then a young family who was also in transition - albeit a bit longer one. Our house is finally empty again, but we're expecting baby #3 in the spring and felt like we wouldn't be able to give our best parenting to a teen in foster care while we're adjusting to a new baby. We still have extra room, so we're applying to be a host family for international students at the local community college. We just can't help ourselves! We love to "entertain strangers" - and who knows, maybe we'll entertain some angels unawares.

?Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.? (Heb. 13:2.)

My husband and I are applying for a license to provide foster care. We specifically want to foster children who will be available for adoption, although we know that it won?t always be the case.

I?ve been reading Gene R. Cook?s Raising Up a Family to the Lord, and then searched on lds.org for some articles about foster care. I read a few good stories from other saints who have cared for other children in their home, and the scripture above from Hebrews stuck out to me.

entertainangels

Since I was a young child myself, I have had a desire to be a mother ? and not just a mother to my own children. I want to be a mother to any child who needs a good mother. In the case of foster care, it may not be permanent, but I know that if I will make myself available, the Lord will bless these children through my efforts, and will also bless me through these little angels.

Every child deserves a chance to see what a good, functional family unit looks like.

This is what I want to accomplish as a foster parent:

We may have these children in our lives for only a brief time before they go back to their own families. They may not return to ideal situations, but the children go home knowing a little more about how a family unit should function. Later, when they become adults and parents, examples from good foster parents can influence the choices they make in life.

If I can just be an example that will influence their lives, sending them back to their parents will be a joy for me, instead of a loss.

Do you have a desire to influence other children for good? What have you done lately to nurture a child other than your own?

Optimism on Greece, ECB, lifts shares, euro

LONDON (Reuters) - European shares and the euro edged higher on Tuesday on optimism that meetings on Greece's future and a strategy being drawn up by the European Central Bank will lead to progress in solving the euro zone debt crisis.

European shares <.fteu3> , which have risen 16 percent since June, opened up 0.2 percent, with the main indexes in London <.ftse> Paris <.fchi> and Frankfurt <.gdaxi> safely in positive territory.

After modest rises in Asia and a flat finish on Wall Street, the MSCI global share index <.miwd00000pus> was up 0.14 percent at 0715 GMT. <.eu><.l><.n> while the euro rose 0.15 percent versus the dollar with smaller gains also against the yen and sterling.

"The dollar is weaker versus the euro ahead of the key meetings this week that may provide clarity on both the immediate outlook for Greece and the outlook in regard to the ECB's plan to buy sovereign bonds," Derek Halpenny Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi.

"That optimism is persisting today."

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Eurogroup chief Jean-Claude Juncker this week to try and secure more funding from the European Union, International Monetary Fund and ECB, despite falling behind on its debt cut targets.

Investors are also looking for any clues on the ECB's plans for tackling the crisis after it poured cold water on a report suggesting it was considering buying bonds of euro zone countries if their borrowing costs breached a certain level.

Bond markets remained in a cautious mood ahead of an auction of shorter-term 12-18 month debt by Spain, one of the countries now at the centre of the euro zone crisis, later in the morning.

German government bonds, traditionally favored by risk adverse investors, waned slightly in early trading but kept to its tight recent range.

"We expect Spain to continue outperforming Italy especially in the short end on continued expectations of...(the) EFSF (bailout fund) and ECB support," RBS strategists said in a note.

Stop the Bleeding! 7 Business Rip-Offs to Avoid

Is your business bleeding money? Are your costs out of line with the goods or services you receive? Are you sick and tired of getting ripped off?

If so, do yourself a favor and review your actual operating expenses. Chances are you can whittle them down immediately if you reevaluate your needs and make a few key changes.

One of the best articles I?ve seen on the topic is?an AllBusiness.com post by Matthew McKenzie. He offers 10 concrete money-saving tips that are timely and on point; below, I expand on my seven favorites.

1. Don?t Pick the Wrong Credit Card Processor

In this day and age, most businesses, especially retail outfits, consider it financial suicide not to accept credit cards. And it?s true ??customers know how they plan to pay before they ever walk into your store; if they see that you won?t accept their credit card, they?ll find a competitor who does.

Knowing that the option to pay with plastic is so important to your customers, how do you offer that convenience without taking a bath on the deal?

For starters, McKenzie suggests evaluating your credit card processing company and its fee structure very carefully. You may be able to get certain fees waived just for asking. McKenzie points to this free e-book from FeeFighters.org and? the Merchant Bill of Rights site for guidance in saving on credit card processing fees.

2. Never Lease a Point-of-Sale Terminal

Considering that you can buy a credit card payment terminal for a couple hundred bucks, why would you rent one for $20 a month? That?s the typical fee for a 48-month contract, which would have you paying nearly $1,000 in the long run for a piece of gear that?s worth much, much less.

3. Don?t Buy Extended Warranties

I?m the kind of shopper who thinks that if the product I am buying is good enough to be offered through my favorite retailers, its standard warranty should be adequate, too. I encourage you to adopt the same mindset and act accordingly.

Why?

Because, as McKenzie puts it, ?If a product is going to break, it?s more likely to break either right away, when it?s still covered by the manufacturer?s warranty, or after the extended warranty expires.?

I?ve gotten so fed up with extended warranty sales pitches that now, when a rep launches into one, I ask, ?Are you saying this product is junk?? Trust me ? the question makes them blush and they quickly drop the subject!

4. Give Up Your Identity Theft Insurance

If you?ve purchased identity theft insurance in the last few years, I suggest rethinking your decision. This is a clear case of the insurance industry capitalizing on fear-mongering and creating policies that McKenzie calls ?riddled with gotchas and loopholes.?

For example, did you know that even though identity theft is most often committed by a family member, identity theft insurance won?t cover your losses if you?re ripped off by a loved one? It?s a sad truth, as is the fact that identity theft insurance doesn?t reimburse stolen funds, either! So what good is it, really?

5. Don?t Buy Low-Deductible Insurance

As long as we?re on the topic of insurance, another thing to avoid is a low-deductible plan. If you?re a typical policyholder, you?ll?go for years without filing a claim; it?makes far?better sense to pay a lower premium for a higher-deductible plan. Just be sure?you can?set aside enough money in your emergency fund to cover?that higher deductible, should the need arise. That way, you?ll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing you?re covered, you?ll just pay a lot less for it.

6. Steer Clear of Online Marketing Consultants

If you have a web site, you?ll need to ensure that search engines can find, index and display your relevant content. The discipline is known as Search Engine Optimization/Search Engine Marketing (SEO/SEM) and it?s a $20 billion/year industry.

But McKenzie advises against signing on with an expensive SEO consultant. He points to Brandt Dainow?s 7 ways SEO consultants rip off their clients on iMedia Connection, which exposes what the author calls ?a toolbox of tricks with which to extract money from na?ve SEO clients.?

The takeaway: As a small business owner, you?ll do well to learn the basics of SEO/SEM for yourself.??The best?FREE resource I know of is SEO Fast Start by?Dan Thies and Leslie Rohde.? Believe me, these guys know what Google wants ? and?they?re willing to share their knowledge with you. Let them!

7. Don?t Overuse Your Inkjet Printer

Never print routine text files on an inkjet printer. The ink is prohibitively expensive?and worse, many such machines force you to change cartridges that are still as much as half full! At a cost of nearly $5,000 a gallon, your inkjet cartridges should be reserved for photos, graphics and presentations. For routine black-and-white print jobs, use a laser printer, instead. Those pages cost only one-third to one-sixth as much as inkjet-printed pages.

Nuff Said!

McKenzie concluded his article with three other?rip-offs?that every small business should?avoid:

  • Overpaying for mobile service
  • Unreasonable travel-related charges
  • Padded employee expense reports

Unfortunately, I do not see how you can avoid the first one ??overpaying for mobile service. No matter what data plan you choose, McKenzie says you can expect your provider to tack on about 14.5 percent each month in taxes, fees and surcharges. There?s simply no getting around this one ? mobile service is very expensive; think long and hard about whether you really need it.

computer hands
Finally, the best way I know of to reduce travel expenses is to leverage technologies that eliminate the need for business travel all together. There are plenty of solutions that let you meet face-to-face from the comfort of your office or conference room. That means you don?t have to catch a plane and reserve a room every time you need to connect with a long-distance client. So if you don?t yet have a web cam, now?s the time to get one!

Getting ripped off ? We?d love to hear your story! Sound off below! And if you liked this article, please be sociable and share!

Pussy Riot-like justice around the world

MOSCOW (AP) ? The two-year prison sentence handed down to punk rock band Pussy Riot for a provocative protest inside a Moscow cathedral called attention to just how hard President Vladimir Putin is clamping down on minor displays of dissent.

But Russia isn't the only country where people are punished for offenses that many in the West might consider trivial. People can spend years in prison for insulting the king in Thailand, slaughtering cattle without government permission in Cuba, selling land to Israelis in the West Bank and having gay sex in Ethiopia. A British man was sent to jail for stealing a bottle of water.

While blasphemy is considered a serious crime in much of the Muslim world, a Christian girl in Pakistan has been arrested after furious neighbors accused her of burning pages of the Quran.

Here's a look around the world at crime and punishment:

SINGAPORE

Vandalism is punishable in Singapore by prison terms and three to eight strokes of the cane, delivered on the buttocks with a thick rattan stick that leaves lifelong scars. In 2010, Swish national Oliver Fricker pleaded guilty to trespassing into a subway train depot and creating graffiti on a car. He got seven months in jail and three strokes of the cane.

Singapore also is famous for the ban it imposed on chewing gum in 1992. Violations carry a fine of several hundred dollars, although no one has been convicted in recent years.

___

THAILAND

Thailand has some of the harshest lese majeste laws in the world, mandating a jail term of three to five years for defaming, insulting or threatening the king. Among those who have run afoul of the law is Joe Gordon, a Thai-born American sentenced to two and a half years in prison for translating a banned biography about the Thai king and posting it online. He was freed in July by a royal pardon. Amphon Tangnoppakul was not so fortunate. He died in prison in May at age 62, less than a year into a 20-year sentence for sending four defamatory text messages.

___

ZIMBABWE

Zimbabweans are routinely arrested and fined for insulting President Robert Mugabe under sweeping security laws that prohibit citizens from "undermining the authority of the president." A salesman was held in jail from April to July after being found with satirical cartoons of Mugabe on his mobile phone, including one depicting a naked, skeletal Mugabe sitting on his haunches. His case was eventually dropped on a legal technicality.

___

INDONESIA

Last year, a Muslim mob stormed a courthouse on Java and set three churches on fire to protest what they called a lenient sentence for a Christian convicted of blaspheming Islam. Antonius Richmond Bawengan was found guilty of distributing Christian books and leaflets that "spread hatred about Islam" and was sentenced to five years in prison, the maximum term.

___

MOROCCO

In May, a court in Morocco convicted rapper Mouad Belghouat of attacking the image of the security services in a song about police corruption and sentenced him to a year in prison. His defense team claims the case is a political attack on the pro-democracy activist.

___

LEBANON

In Lebanon, considered to be one of the most liberal countries in the Middle East, insulting religions or sects can lead to a prison sentence of up to three years, a law designed to protect co-existence in a country with 18 religious sects. Insulting the president also is punishable by up to three years in prison, and a couple of years ago three people were arrested for slandering the president in Facebook postings. They received jail sentences, but were released after a few months.

___

PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY

Anyone defaming or vilifying a president, minister, lawmaker or other high official faces up to three years in prison. Journalists and bloggers have been detained for weeks under the law, including one blogger who cursed President Mahmoud Abbas on Facebook. Her case was dropped due to public pressure just before trial.

The Palestinians also have tough laws when it comes to dealing with Israel. Since the Palestinian Authority was established two decades ago, 140 people have been charged with selling West Bank land to Israel, a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Palestinian officials said it was unknown how many of them were convicted.

___

SAUDI ARABIA

Women can face arrest for driving and trying to travel abroad without the permission of their husband or male guardian. Unrelated men and woman can risk arrest for mingling in private or public.

One other rather unique rule in effect throughout much of the Gulf makes bouncing checks a criminal offense, punishable by jail time and/or deportation.

___

PAKISTAN

People convicted of insulting Islam's Prophet Muhammad can be sentenced to death in Pakistan. Human rights activists complain the blasphemy laws are widely misused to persecute Christians or settle scores in the mostly Muslim country. A Christian girl was arrested last week after hundreds of angry people gathered outside her house in Islamabad and demanded that police investigate reports that she had burned pages of the Islamic holy book, the Quran.

___

ETHIOPIA

Homosexual acts carry severe penalties in many African countries, including in Ethiopia where those convicted of gay sex can face 10 years in prison.

___

CUBA

Some nonpolitical crimes carry surprisingly stiff penalties in Cuba. Farmers who slaughter their own cattle without permission from the government face potential prison terms of four to 10 years, while transporting, selling or even purchasing such beef also can land someone in jail.

In January, six people were given eight- and 10-year sentences for cutting down nine mahogany trees in a botanical reserve.

___

UNITED STATES

Tough federal drug laws have mandatory minimum five-year prison terms and up to $5 million in fines for first offense trafficking, and life imprisonment and up to $20 million in fines for third offenses.

The three-strikes laws helped send a California man to prison for 25 years to life for possession of about $10 worth of methamphetamine. His first two convictions were for burglary. Shane Taylor's sentence was appealed to California's Supreme Court.

___

BRITAIN

And then there is Nicolas Robinson, who drew a six-month jail sentence for stealing a water bottle from a London supermarket during the public disorder that swept the country last summer. Even tougher sentences were handed down to Jordan Blackshaw and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan for trying to organize riots on Facebook; both received four years in jail despite the fact that no one showed up, aside from police. Judges said the sentences were necessary in the context of the violent unrest.

HBT: Giants get reprint on Melky Cabrera t-shirt night

Sept. 8 is ?Gigantes T-shirt? day at AT&T Park, and while Melky Cabrera?s name isn?t attached to the promotion, it seems his likeness was going to be on the apparel, something that might have been even more embarrassing than tonight?s Hunter Pence bobblehead night in Philly.

Fortunately, the Giants were able to get a redo on the tees before they were printed, CSN Bay Area?s Andrew Baggarly reports. The shirts, set to be handed out to the first 20,000 fans at the game, will now feature Angel Pagan instead.

Frankly, I?d still rather go Sept. 22 for Pablo Sandoval Garden Gnome night.
