Student left in DEA cell to get $4 million from US
SAN DIEGO (AP) ? An attorney for the man who was abandoned in a Drug Enforcement Administration holding cell for four days without food or water says his client has agreed to settle claims for $4.1 million.
Daniel Chong's attorney, Eugene Iredale, said Tuesday that no one has yet been disciplined for the April 2012 incident and no criminal charges will be filed.
Iredale says the Justice Department's inspector general is investigating what caused Chong's near-death experience, but that he still has no answers.
Chong's attorneys say the DEA had no policy on the treatment of detainees at the time. It does now, and that policy includes cameras in cells and daily inspections.
Chong says he drank his own urine to stay alive and tried to write a farewell message to his mother with his own blood.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
The Justice Department will pay $4.1 million to a California college student left in a Drug Enforcement Administration holding cell for four days without food or water last year, two people familiar with the case told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Daniel Chong, 23, was detained in an April 2012 drug raid in San Diego and left in the 5-by-10-foot windowless holding cell. He said he drank his own urine to stay alive and tried to write a farewell message to his mother with his own blood.
The people familiar with the case spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the settlement before it was announced Tuesday morning at a news conference.
Chong, who was an engineering student at University of California, San Diego, was at a friend's house in April 2012 when a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration raid netted 18,000 ecstasy pills, other drugs and weapons. Chong and eight others were taken into custody.
Agents told Chong he would not be charged and had him wait in the cell at DEA offices in San Diego. The door did not reopen for four days, when agents found him severely dehydrated and covered in his own feces.
Chong said he began to hallucinate on the third day. He urinated on a metal bench to drink his urine. He stacked a blanket, his pants and shoes on the bench and tried to reach an overhead fire sprinkler, futilely swatting at it with his cuffed hands to set it off.
Chong said last year that he gave up and accepted death. He bit into his eyeglasses to break them. He said he used a shard of glass to carve "Sorry Mom" onto his arm so he could leave something for her. He managed to finish an "S."
Chong was hospitalized for five days for dehydration, kidney failure, cramps and a perforated esophagus. He lost 15 pounds.
The DEA issued a rare public apology at the time.
Chong's attorney, Eugene Iredale, said Monday that he would announce "an important development" Tuesday, little more than a year after filing a $20 million claim against the federal government.
A DEA spokesman, Rusty Payne, referred questions Monday to the Justice Department, which handled settlement negotiations. A call to the Justice Department's public affairs office was not returned.

99% 20 Feet From Stardom
All Critics (70) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (68) | Rotten (1)
The movie takes its cues from Standing in the Shadows of Motown, another act of pop-culture revisionism that tried to give musical credit where it was due.
Just about everything in this movie is right. And anybody who gives a rip about unsung heroines of popular music and giving credit when credit's overdue had better come up with a good excuse not to see it.
You may never hear the Rolling Stones's Gimme Shelter the same way again after hearing Jagger's and Clayton's separate accounts of the recording of the song.
The enthusiasm and love of music on display is just unavoidable. "20 Feet" may not get the whole story, but it gets some good ones.
Music documentarian Morgan Neville uses a mix of live interviews and archival footage to let the singers, and their music, tell their stories of vocal triumph and thwarted ambition.
You know all those doo-doo-doos and whoa-whoas-whoas you hear in pop hits? Without them, supplied by the likes of Darlene Love and Merry Clayton, you likely wouldn't be singing along to the songs you hear on your car radio.
I guess it leaves us with the message not everyone is destined to be a star, for one reason or another.
Although a few white and male backup singers appear, the film becomes a de facto chronicle of the experiences of many African-American women in show business, who -- like their counterparts in less high-profile jobs -- often are undervalued and exploited.
In a way, critics are the backup singers of film.
20 Feet From Stardom will be highly entertaining to anyone who ever let a needle drop into a '70s-era groove.
Neville does a good job of highlighting songs that are especially characterized by backup singers, like Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side,' and introducing us to some of the 'unsung' talent that made those hits possible.
This fantastic glimpse into the lives of background singers, old and new, directed by Morgan Neville, is completely mesmerizing.
It is a total pleasure, a rare treat, to listen and watch old footage of these indispensable performers belt out their melodies and harmonies. They are truly pioneers that helped shape the world of music for generations to come.
This is a fascinating doc for pop, soul, R&B and rock fans, for it peels back the often unfair layers of the music business like the skins on an onion. Sometimes, it'll make you cry to witness how terribly these talents were treated.
It's important to finally put names and faces to the voices of these women because, without them, countless songs would sound horrible.
Neville's greatest strength is as a historian, able to sort through a wealth of details to find the pieces he needs to tell one clear, compelling story.
Salutes songs that wouldn't work without the back-ups and, in effect, turn us all into back-up singers.
Not the deepest documentary you're likely to come across this year -- in fact, it's not deep at all -- but it may well be the most enjoyable one.
The transcendent joy and agonizing heartbreak of making music - and trying to make it in music - have seldom been captured as vividly as in "20 Feet from Stardom."
If music has the power to connect, "Twenty Feet From Stardom" shows it's those backup voices making the connection.

Michigan Football: Previewing the 4 Biggest Position Battles Headed into Fall
This one may be a bit under the radar for some. One would think last year's full-time starter, Raymon Taylor, would have a starting job all but locked up. However, that doesn't seem to be the case.
There has been a constant buzz around Ann Arbor all offseason that Taylor could be unseated by Courtney Avery for multiple reasons.
One reason could date back to the spring game, in which Taylor was benched in favor of Delonte Hollowell; that could have just been a warning sign for Taylor, letting him know he can't relax.
Another reason could be to get freshman Dymonte Thomas into the lineup. The early enrollee is simply too good to keep off the field, and in a crowded secondary, it could be hard to get him playing time.
Allowing Avery to start at corner would enable Thomas to then start at nickelback, the position that Avery manned last year.
There is still a lot to be sorted out, so this is obviously one to keep an eye on.

Toyota struggles to maintain lead on rival GM
Paul A. Eisenstein The Detroit Bureau
Toyota
It's been a tough year for Toyota, which hoped to boost its sales numbers with the rugged Toyota Tundra.
For a vehicle with a payload capacity of 2,000 pounds and the ability to tow a 10,000-pound trailer, the 2014 Toyota Tundra will be expected to do some heavy lifting -- and not just on the job site.
It?s been an unusually tough year for Toyota, both here and abroad. While the maker revealed Friday that it had narrowly retained its global sales lead, the gap between the Japanese giant and rival General Motors markedly narrowed and while GM gained 4 percent for the first six months of 2013, Toyota was down 1.2 percent.
It hasn?t helped to be caught up in an ongoing political dispute between China and Japan that even saw rioters burn a Toyota dealership. But the maker has also had some unexpected setbacks in what has long been its most profitable market, the U.S., where two key lines, the midsize Camry and the Prius hybrid ?family,? suffered unanticipated sales declines. Meanwhile, the outgoing Toyota Tundra pickup has failed to take advantage of the revival of the U.S. truck market, the fastest-growing segment in the industry this year.
?Toyota will be perfectly positioned to take advantage of that growth,? once it launches a major update of the Tundra next month, predicted Bill Fay, the head of the flagship Toyota division for the U.S. market, during a media drive of the new pickup. He expects a 30 percent jump in sales next year. In a market dominated by Detroit, that?s little more than an after-thought.
Read more: Ford Hangs Out Help Wanted Sign but Where are All the Applicants?
When the outgoing Tundra was introduced in 2007, many analysts had big expectations for the new truck. So did Toyota, which built a dedicated factory in San Antonio, Texas to handle production. But after initially topping 200,000, sales quickly plunged. While much of that was the result of the overall crash in pickup demand during the recession, Fay admits the truck has lagged the segment?s revival.
And it?s not the only product challenge the maker is facing. The Camry, which has been the nation?s best-selling passenger car for more than a decade, suffered a 2 percent decline during the first half of the year even as the rest of the market surged. Meanwhile, the Prius, itself the long-dominant hybrid model, was off 5 percent between January and June.
Fay downplayed both problems, though he acknowledged both of Toyota?s key models are facing tougher competition. Ford, in fact, has made a successful point of targeting the various Prius models with an assortment of its own gas-electric models, including the Fusion Hybrid and C-Max Hybrid, which set sales records for the first half.
The Japanese maker has had to respond by cutting prices on the Camry and by ramping up incentives on both the midsize sedan and the various Prius hybrids. But it can afford to do so, noted analyst George Peterson, chief analyst with AutoPacific, Inc., noting that the weakened yen has given the Japanese maker more cash to play with.

While Toyota has been increasing incentives selectively, it still has some of the lowest givebacks in the market, an average $1,660 per vehicle in June, according to TrueCar.com, compared to $2,537 for the industry overall.
And Fay suggested Toyota could further rein in that spending with the launch of four new models in 2014, a list that includes not just the Tundra but an all-new version of the Corolla, the 800-pound gorilla in the compact sedan segment.

But analyst Peterson says Toyota has other worries that aren?t so easy to dismiss. The maker has been lagging in recent AutoPacific studies that focus on not only quality, reliability and dependability ? traditional Toyota strengths ? but also on the factors that surprise and delight consumers.
That was echoed by the results of the new J.D. Power APEAL study which also focuses on what the industry calls ?things-gone-right? factors. While Volkswagen and Chevrolet led the industry, the Toyota brand landed fifth from the bottom. Perhaps equally disconcerting, GM also topped the more traditional J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey last month, handily outperforming Toyota.
?The competition isn?t standing still,? said Peterson. ?Toyota has been building acceptable appliances for decades. Now they have to make products that are exciting and sexy.?

Indeed, the newly redesigned Toyota Avalon was supposed to be a prime example of what Toyota could do, underscoring the oft-stated goal of CEO Akio Toyoda to put more ?passion? into the brand. But that isn?t as easy as it might seem, as Toyota was reminded when influential Consumer Reports magazine ranked the new Chevrolet Impala tops in the full-size sedan segment, besting the new Avalon.
There are other challenges facing Toyota. For one thing, caution analysts, it has become almost wedded to the Baby Boom generation and is struggling to attract younger, hipper buyers. That was supposed to be the role of Scion. The ?brand-within-a-brand? has clearly been bringing in younger blood ? but despite scoring a hit with the new FR-S sports car, overall Scion sales have fallen sharply the last several years and Toyota is struggling to come up with a rescue strategy.

Despite the challenges, Toyota brand boss Fay insisted he?s ?pleased with the position we?re in? going into the 2014 model-year.
And, indeed, the maker remains a significant force to be reckoned with, echoed analyst Peterson, noting that his research finds Toyota?s reputation has fully recovered from the hits it took during the unintended acceleration scandal of a few years back.
That said, Peterson and other observers warn that despite its size and power, the Japanese giant has some significant and mounting challenges ahead ? enough to strain even a heavy lifter like the new Toyota Tundra.

Police fire teargas at violent protests in Sidi Bouzid
TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisian police fired teargas late on Saturday to disperse violent protests in the southern town of Sidi Bouzid, cradle of the country's revolution and hometown of slain opposition figure Mohamed Brahmi, witnesses said.
Angry demonstrators, who came out to protest Thursday's assassination of Brahmi, threw rocks at police, said local resident Mahdi al-Horshani.
"Hundreds of protesters lit tires on fire to block roads and they threw rocks at the police," he told Reuters by telephone. "There is a lot of anger and frustration at the situation."

Clay Matthews 'absolutely' wants HGH testing in NFL
Green Bay --- One by one, high-profile players across the NFL continue to say they want human growth hormone (HGH) testing in the NFL. On Friday, league MVP?Adrian Peterson said to bring on testing.
And on Saturday, outside linebacker Clay Matthews basically echoed the running back.
?Absolutely,"?Matthews said. "I?ve been in favor of that for a long time now. I?m glad it finally looks like we?re taking steps in the right direction to even the playing field. I know a lot of players have come out in favor of it so I?m looking forward to it."
Matthews has a unique perspective in that his father spent 19 years in the league. Clay Matthews Jr.'s career stretched from the 70's to the 90's.
"Speaking to my father when he played,"?Matthews said, "and they leveled the playing field back in the day, it?s always interesting to see the players who maintain their level of play and who fall off. But I also think it?s just a step in the right direction for sports in general.?
It's been two years since the NFL?and NFLPA agreed to implement HGH?testing. As the Journal Sentinel detailed in April, some former and current players in the league believe that HGH use in the league is common. One anonymous NFC?starter said "it's like clockwork," adding "Not tested and it's easy to get. Nowadays, dude? In 2013? (Expletive) yeah."
The player estimated that 10-15 players on each team use HGH.
There has been progress of late. The league and the players association are reportedly working on an agreement.
Asked if he looks at players around the league and wonders himself about the substance's use, Matthews said, "We've got some talented players around here."
"There are some studs around the league,"?he said. "We?ll see when the time comes. But for the time being we have to deal with some pretty good players out there.?

Former Navy SEAL Rips Those Who Criticize Guns for Defense: ?Unacceptable? to Deny Someone?s Right to Be Prepared & ?Survive?
In his latest commentary for NRA News, former Navy SEAL Dom Raso vehemently defends the right of all Americans to secure their homes and families with guns.
And along the way he dismantles the rhetoric of those who seek to deny their fellow citizens of that right:
If you think people who decide to protect themselves are crazy, you either have not been in any situation that's caused you to feel that way, or you're completely ignorant to your surroundings--because bad things happen all over the country and all over the world.
If you choose not to be prepared for those situations, no one is going to criticize you. But it's unacceptable to deny or limit someone else's home-defense preparedness.
Can you guarantee me and the American people zero crime? Absolutely not. So stop limiting their ability to survive.
Raso also invokes a comment President Obama recently made about his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, noting that she said if she was living in Iowa, she'd want a gun, too.
(Credit: NRA site)
"Why do you need one in Iowa and not the city?" Raso replies. "A bad guy is a bad guy, and a threat is a threat no matter where you are."
Raso encourages listeners to strongly consider arming themselves for such reasons--especially in light of the reality that if a situation occurs where lives are on the line, we naturally look to those who're prepared anyway.
"I'm not asking you to walk around in fear every day, but you have to be aware of reality," Raso says. "Think about the things you always hear victims say: 'It was such a nice neighborhood' or 'He was such a nice kid; I never expected anything like that to happen.' What that says to me is that they weren't prepared."
(Credit: NRA site)
Raso concludes with this blistering critique of the anti-gun lobby:
When these life or death situations occur, what difference does it make to anyone whether that potential victim has 10 rounds or 100 rounds? Or a bolt action or a semi automatic? Absolutely none. And we as Americans should be doing everything we possibly can to let people in this country protect their families, their homes, and themselves the way they feel comfortable and not how a hustling politician, celebrity, or anyone else tells them to.

92% Frances Ha
All Critics (109) | Top Critics (36) | Fresh (100) | Rotten (9)
In your twenties you decide on the final version of you. Sophie is working on it; Frances is stuck in her crazy, clueless, can't-pay-the-rent stage.
It's a tribute to Gerwig's performance, somehow both clumsy and elegant, that she wins us over despite ourselves, that we come to appreciate her aimlessness in a goal-oriented society ...
This is an odd film (creepier than it knows), and even if you feel the atmospheric company of Dunham-ism, with a little of Whit Stillman, Henry Jaglom, and Woody Allen, the core influence on Noah Baumbach's film is fifty years older or more.
Baumbach usually builds his films around difficult protagonists, but Frances is entirely endearing, at once silly and deep, hopeless and promising.
The dialogue and editing are zippy and generally charming, combining with the tart observations of 20-something culture to create a nice frisson.
A black-and-white salute to the French New Wave (the score is borrowed from Georges Delerue, composer of many a Truffaut and Godard film) that manages to be very much of this moment ...
Much of the reason why Frances Ha is a far more well-crafted and enjoyable piece of cinema than either Lola Versus or Damels in Distress.
The story becomes chaotic and disjointed, but that's the point: Frances is tumbling towards her 30s with no sense of direction and this is where Gerwig excels, deftly pulling you along on a bumpy ride.
Baumbach and Gerwig have co-written a film about the point when spontaneous, giddy arrested adolescence ceases to be endearing and threatens to be annoying.
Anchored by a charming performance from Greta Gerwig, it's as light and breezy as a walk in Central Park, and just as refreshing.
A joyous portrait of an unformed personality that should strike chords of recognition in all who watch it.
Frances Ha could be THE post-college-angst comedy of the '10s. This is what happens when Mumblecore grows up and turns into a real movie.
Agreeable low-budget modern-day urban comedy.
Frances Ha is a refreshingly contemporary film, exploring 20-something hipster ennui with accuracy, empathy and humour.
As long as you remember to laugh, Frances Ha is a tolerable experience. Forget the "ha ha" and Frances Ha is beyond unbearable. I found this an odd and often frustrating truth, but it's what makes Noah Baumbach's new movie a success.
Gerwig keeps you on side and rooting for Frances to get her act together in what becomes an affectionate salute to messy lives, an endearing underachiever and a New York state of mind.
Don't be fooled by Frances with all her feigned insecurity and branding of herself as "undateable" and predicting she'll be a lonely spinster. She's a psychopath.
Gerwig's deft screwball timing turns every disaster into a grace note. This may be a comedy of awkwardness, but rather than curl, your toes will tap.
A refreshing amount of buoyancy to dance and charm its way through Quarter-Life Crisis territory. One of the best performances of Greta Gerwig's career to date
Frances Ha is a sympathetic but not uncritical depiction of a girl's gradual evolution into a woman; one that never condescends by forcing her to abandon all her quirks and impish qualities in the final act... An absolute delight, this is.
Indie darling Gerwig has a great deal to do with the picture's success: she's disarmingly likable...
There's a level of audacity beneath the lightweight whimsy in this unassuming low-budget comedy.
"Frances Ha makes a star out of Gerwig, and she's the kind of star we need: a goofy one we can feel tender about but never underestimate."

LG ANNOUNCES SECOND-QUARTER 2013 FINANCIAL RESULTS
[More from BGR: Nokia Lumia 1020 review]
Company Sets New Quarterly Record with Sales of 12 Million Smartphones
SEOUL,?July?24, 2013 ??LG Electronics (LG) today reported solid positive net income in the second-quarter as a result of improved performance in a majority of its business units. LG?s mobile phone business shipped 12.1 million smartphones between April and June, the highest ever in the company?s history.
Revenues in the 2013 second quarter rose 10.1 percent year-over-year to KRW 15.23 trillion (USD 13.58 billion), reflecting strong sales increases in most of LG?s business units. Second-quarter operating profit of KRW 479 billion (USD 426.92 million) and net profit of KRW 156 billion (USD 139.04 million), while down slightly from the same period last year, improved significantly from the previous quarter.
The LG Home Entertainment Company reported revenues of KRW 5.5 trillion (USD 4.91 billion), an increase of 6.4 percent from the previous quarter and virtually unchanged year-over-year.Second-quarter operating profit of KRW 107 billion (USD 95.37 million) increased from the previous quarter thanks to stronger sales in developing markets and successful new models, but declined compared to the same period last year due to intense competition and slower demand resulting in a lower average selling price. With continuing weak demand globally and expected increased competition, the company is investing in the premium and large-screen TV market with the expansion of Ultra HD TV and OLED TV products in developed markets.
The LG Mobile Communications Company continued to improve its position in the second quarter recording revenues of KRW 3.12 trillion (USD 2.78 billion), an increase of 34.5 percent from the same period last year. The company shipped 12.1 million smartphones in the second quarter, a new quarterly unit sales record for LG. Operating profit increased year-over-year to KRW 61 billion (USD 54.37 million) but declined from the previous quarter as a result of weaker demand in the Korean market, lower average selling price due to increased competition, and higher marketing investments. Shipments from mass-market smartphone models such as L-Series II and F-Series are expected to drive sales growth, while high-end products such as G Pro and LG G2 should increase the company?s product competitiveness.
The LG Home Appliance Company recorded the highest quarterly revenues in its history with sales in the second quarter of KRW 3.19 trillion (USD 2.84 billion), up 10.9 percent from the previous year largely due to improved sales in the United States and emerging markets such as China and Latin America. Second-quarter operating profits of KRW 121 billion (USD 107.84 million) rose quarter-over-quarter but fell compared with the same period last year due to increased R&D investments. LG will focus on continuing to grow its home appliance business by producing differentiated products with improved energy efficiency while further improving its cost structure.
The LG Air Conditioning and Energy Solutions Company reported record-high revenues of KRW 1.73 trillion (USD 1.55 billion) in the second quarter, an 18.4 percent increase from last year?s second quarter and a 42.5 percent increase from the first quarter of 2013. Operating income of KRW 171 billion (USD 152.41 million) rose compared with the previous year and previous quarter, while operating profit margin increased to 9.9 percent largely due to improved product mix and business structure.

For Ohio animals, a spread of doughnuts, hot dogs

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? It turns out doughnuts, dog food and Gatorade are bear necessities.
At least those were the preferred foods of Dewey, a 400-pound Asiatic black bear temporarily housed at a state facility in Ohio.
The building holds wild creatures confiscated or surrendered under Ohio's exotic animal law, which was strengthened following the release of dozens of animals including lions and tigers by their suicidal owner in 2011 in Zanesville. Authorities fearing for public safety killed most of the animals in a headline-capturing saga.
At least five alligators and two bears have come through the state's roughly $3 million facility since it opened in February. Ohio's agriculture department then looks for permanent housing for the critters in sanctuaries or zoos.
Groceries and supplies for the hungry boarders have topped $1,025 since the end of May, according to records obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request.
Items included a 20-inch jungle ball for the bears bought online for $225 and five, 5-foot kiddie pools for alligators from Wal-Mart for about $74.
Feeding logs show Dewey and an American black bear named Boo Boo weren't light eaters.
Dewey's meals included chicken breast, nuts, cookies and bagels. Boo Boo, a female who weighed 250 pounds, enjoyed hot dogs, lettuce, corn and fish.
Both bears had poor diets before they arrived. Sixteen-year-old Dewey ate like a teenager, munching on pizza and drinking Mountain Dew.
The state initially got food for the bears through an agreement with the Columbus zoo, though Dewey turned up his nose at the nutritious chow.
"In this particular case, we felt like it was more important to keep them on the food that they liked," said Erica Hawkins, a spokeswoman for Ohio's agriculture department.
State veterinarians eventually worked more wholesome items into their diets, she said.
Both bears left this month for a sanctuary in Colorado. The department expects to see more creatures after Jan. 1, when Ohio's law allows officials to take away dangerous wild animals if their owners don't meet state requirements to keep them.

Service celebrates life of slain college student Stephanie Schmidt
Two decades after the death of a Leawood college student, her friends and relatives gathered at a Prairie Village church to celebrate her life.
Stephanie Schmidt was a 19-year-old student at Pittsburg State University in 1992 when co-worker Donald Ray Gideon kidnapped, raped and murdered her.
After Schmidt's death, her parents turned their attention to advocating for victims and spent most of the past 20 years pushing for more stringent laws and longer sentences.
Stephanie's Law, which allows the state to keep certain sex offenders confined to mental facilities after they serve their sentences, was passed in her honor.
Sunday, Schmidt herself was the focus of "Sing Out for Stephanie," aimed at honoring the life of the person she was. She would have celebrated her 40th birthday earlier this month.
"I think the important thing is that we have gone on with our lives. We have her in our lives every day. Stephanie knows we are doing this," said her mother, Peggy Schmidt. "It's a good time and (we're) remembering memories of Stephanie growing up."
Stephanie Schmidt's young nieces attended the celebration, which gave them the chance to understand why she was so special to so many people.

Zimmerman emerges to help family from burning car in Sanford, Fla.

George Zimmerman listens as the verdict is announced on July 13.
By Tom Winter and Andrew Rafferty, NBC News
Police say George Zimmerman helped rescue?a family?trapped in an overturned vehicle off a Florida highway last week, Zimmerman's first known public sighting since his acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
The incident occurred on July 17 in Sanford, Fla., near the intersection of Interstate 4 and State Road 46, officials confirmed to NBC News. The rescue was first reported by ABC News.
Zimmerman and another man were assisting a family of four when officers with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene of the accident. A blue Ford Explorer had traveled off the road and rolled over, according to officials. ?
Zimmerman and the other man were helping the two children and their parents get out of the overturned vehicle, the Seminole County Sheriff?s Office said. The former neighborhood watch volunteer left the scene after making contact with police and did not witness the crash.
There were no injuries to any of the vehicle?s occupants, according to police.
A Seminole County jury found Zimmerman not guilty July 13 in the death of 17-year-old Martin. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense on Feb. 26, 2012.?
Since then, Zimmerman?s family has said the 29-year-old was in hiding and had received death threats. Zimmerman?s parents said in an interview that they don?t even know where their son is hiding.
The verdict has prompted rallies and protests. Protests in Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., turned violent as demonstrators called for an overhaul of the justice system and repeal of Florida?s ?Stand Your Ground? self-defense law.?
