Hafeez hails ?exceptional? Yuvraj Singh ? Cricket News Update

Pakistan?s T20 skipper Mohammad Hafeez lauded Man of the Match Yuvraj Singh for his blistering half-century knock in the second and final T20 International against India in Ahmedabad on Friday, saying the veteran left-hander was ?exceptional? with the bat.

The 31-year-old Chandigarh star smashed a swashbuckling 72 off just 36 balls to help India set an intimidating 193-run target for the archrivals Pakistan in the must-win encounter. On the course, the left-hander shared a 97-run stand with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (33 off 23), with the bulk coming from the former, who smashed seven huge sixes and four boundaries during his 59-minute stay at the crease.

"No doubt, Yuvi was exceptional today," Hafeez said while speaking to media reporters after his side?s 11-run defeat in the second T20I. "His partnership with?MS Dhoni?was the turning point of this match."?

"We were not expecting it to go that further. We were thinking about restricting them to 160-170. I think [India] did the basics right," lamented the experienced all-rounder.

In reply, opener Nasir Jamshed (41) and the visiting skipper Mohammad Hafeez (55) tried their best to chase down the 193-run target, but a clinical bowling performance from Bengal pacer Ashok Dinda (4-0-36-3) in the death overs ensured it was India?s day. Dinda dismissed big hitting Umar Akmal (24 off 17) in the 17th over, before removing danger man Hafeez and wicketkeeper batsman Kamran Akmal in the penultimate over of Pakistan?s chase, to help the hosts restrict the Men in Green to 181 for 7.

"[Ashok] Dinda was good in the last two overs," said Hafeez, a veteran of 29 Tests and 107 One Day Internationals.

"His yorkers were right and we thought if we can get a ball to hit then we can win the match. But the second last over, Dinda bowled well where Kamran and I got out. If either of us had scored a boundary, then it would have eased the pressure," added the visiting skipper, who walked away with the Player of the Series award for scoring back-to-back half centuries in the short series.

Airliner lands on Myanmar road in fog; 2 killed

(AP) ? An Air Bagan flight packed with Christmas tourists crash-landed on a road in central Myanmar on Tuesday, killing two people and injuring 11, officials said.

Four foreigners were among the injured, state television reported. It said the fatalities included an 11-year-old passenger believed to be a Myanmar citizen and a man riding a motorcycle on the road where the plane came down.

The flight was carrying 63 passengers, including 51 foreigners, and six crew members from the city of Mandalay to Heho airport in Shan State, the gateway to a popular tourist destination, Inle Lake, Air Bagan said in a brief statement on its Facebook page.

The airline identified the injured tourists as two Americans, a British national and a Korean. It described the incident as an "emergency landing."

Authorities gave a different and more dramatic account, saying the pilot mistook the road for a runway due to bad weather.

"While descending, the plane mistakenly landed ... due to fog beside the runway," state television reported. It said the aircraft made a hard landing on a road and then came to a stop in a nearby rice paddy field.

"The rear end of the plane broke and caught fire," state TV said, carrying a statement posted on Deputy Information Minister Ye Htut's Facebook page. Rescuers brought the fire under control about 45 minutes later, he said.

Witnesses said smoke filled the plane when it hit the ground and was still rising from the plane's badly charred wreckage hours later.

Airport officials in Heho said that injured passengers were taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Taunggyi for treatment.

Air Bagan is one of five private airlines that fly domestic routes in Myanmar. It is a unit of Htoo Trading Company, which is owned by business tycoon Tay Za.

Russian tycoon Khodorkovsky to walk free in 2014

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian court reduced former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky's jail sentence for embezzlement by two years on Thursday, clearing the way for one of Vladimir Putin's fiercest critics to walk free in October 2014.

Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, is serving a 13-year sentence near the Arctic circle on charges of multi-million dollar tax evasion and money laundering. It was not immediately clear if Thursday's ruling could be overturned on appeal.

His Yukos oil company was broken up and sold off, mainly into state hands, after his arrest in 2003. Khodorkovsky, who is now 49, had appeared to defy calls by the president for rich businessmen, or oligarchs, not to get involved in politics.

Putin once dismissed Khodorkovsky's case by saying thieves must sit in jail. But asked about the ruling on Thursday, he said he bore no grudge against him and said he had not played any role in the court's decision.

"As for Mikhail Borisovich (Khodorkovsky), there was no personal persecution ... This is a purely an economic crime. The court took its decision," Putin told his annual news conference.

"As regards my opinion that a thief must sit in jail, who is against that? Should he walk the streets?," he said.

Khodorkovsky's jailing during Putin's first spell as president from 2000 until 2008 was widely criticized abroad. Kremlin critics regard the two men as political prisoners but the Kremlin denies this.

Opposition leaders have said in the past that the Kremlin would allow Khodorkovsky's release only when certain that he was no longer a political threat to Putin.

Putin says the judiciary is independent, but Khodorkovsky's imprisonment was interpreted by the former KGB spy's opponents as a warning to wealthy tycoons to stay out of politics. It was also seen as the beginning of a Kremlin drive to increase state control over lucrative oil investments.

Khodorkovsky's website said he could be released in October 2014 after serving 11 years of his 13-year sentence. Under the ruling, his business partner Platon Lebedev would also be released early, in July 2014, it said.

The two men have waged court battles for years against their sentences, both in Russia and in the European Court of Human Rights. In the latest appeal, their lawyers based their cases on changes to Russian criminal law.

Defence lawyer Vadim Klyuvgant welcomed the ruling as "a little human relief" in comments published on Khodorkovsky's website, but said it was deliberately timed to coincide with Putin's nationally televised annual news conference.

Khodorkovsky is one of the tycoons who made huge fortunes following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. He says he has been prosecuted over business practices that were both legal and widely used.

Lebedev and Khodorkovsky have hoped repeatedly to secure early release but their hopes have been dashed on each previous occasion.

Lebedev's defense lawyers had earlier persuaded a court to reduce his prison term by three years and four months, but a higher court struck down the ruling.

The lower court then cut Lebedev's term by three years, only for the higher court to reject that decision too.

Feds end Southern California otter ban; expansion of range seen as key to species recovery

WATSONVILLE -- Federal authorities lifted a quarter-century no-otter zone for the waters off Southern California on Tuesday.

The end of the ban south of Point Conception extends federal protections to otters throughout their historic range along California's coast.

"Trying to tell a marine mammal to stay on one side of an imaginary line across the water was a dumb idea," said Steve Shimek, executive director of The Otter Project. The change in policy "will not only protect sea otters from harm, but because of the otters' critical role in the environment, it will also help restore our local ocean ecosystem."

Otters can migrate into the waters of Southern California without threat of being caught and returned to Northern California.

The Monterey-based advocacy group, along with the Santa Barbara-based Environmental Defense Center fought the no-otter zone in court. The 2009 settlement of the lawsuit led to Tuesday's action by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after a series of hearings and an environmental review.

Some 12,000 to 16,000 southern sea otters once roamed from Oregon to Baja, Mexico, but the species was hunted to near extinction for its fur during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The no-otter zone was established in 1987, as federal authorities, worried about a catastrophe such as an oil spill wiping out the chance of a recovery for the threatened species, attempted to establish a back-up population on a remote

Channel Island.

Commercial fishing and oil interests, as well as the Navy, objected to the plan to bring otters south, where they could compete for resources and complicate offshore development. To appease opponents, federal authorities restricted otters in southern waters to San Nicolas Island.

The otters, however, ignored the rule. Those at San Nicolas refused to stay put, and the population there dwindled. Others wandered south from more northern waters.

In 2001 federal officials announced they would no longer enforce the ban, but without the legal protections enjoyed by the species north of Point Conception, otters remained at risk in southern waters. That led to the lawsuit filed by the two environmental groups, which maintain the species needs to reoccupy its historic territory to recover.

Mechanism used by BRCA1 to suppress tumors uncovered

Dec. 17, 2012 ? A new study by Georgetown University Medical Center researchers reveals how a well-known tumor suppressor gene may be functioning to stop cancer cell growth.

The findings, published online December 17 in Oncogene, focus on the gene BRCA1, which is mutated in a majority of families who have hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancers, according to senior author Ronit I. Yarden, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Human Science at the School of Nursing & Health Studies.

"There is a debate in the scientific community about whether BRCA1 enzymatic activity is important in tumor suppressor function," Yarden said. "My lab thinks it is."

Previous research by other investigators, according to Yarden, has shown that BRCA1 is an ubiquitin E3 ligase enzyme. When added to other proteins, ubiquitin has the ability to mark them for degradation and recycling.

Her laboratory worked to discover which proteins BRCA1 is targeting with ubiquitin and how that activity might help attenuate cell division in response to DNA damage -- a function that is important for maintaining genomic integrity and suppressing tumor growth.

"Cells have surveillance mechanisms and check points that govern cell division," she said. "In order to conduct DNA repair in a timely fashion, a cell must be stopped for awhile and then repaired. Once DNA is fixed, division can then begin again."

Yarden's lab discovered that BRCA1 targets two specific proteins cyclin B and Cdc25c, which are the "keeper genes" that regulate the G2/M checkpoint -- the last checkpoint a cell has to go through before it divides.

"The paper shows that in response to DNA damage, BRCA1 is responsible for tagging these two proteins to stop the cells from dividing so repair can occur," Yarden said. "This work shows that BRCA1 enzymatic function is essential for maintaining genomic integrity and may explain BRCA1 role in tumor suppression."

"We identified a novel function," she said. "Although different substrates for BRCA1 were previously identified by other investigators, those didn't explain directly BRCA1's role in maintenance of genomic integrity. Our new targets are the first to directly link this ubiquitination function of BRCA1 to halting cell division that is important for maintenance of genomic integrity and stability, an important activity of tumor suppression."

Alzheimer's-plagued Colombia region is focus of drug trial

YARUMAL, Colombia ? The unusually high incidence of early-onset Alzheimer's disease in this isolated cattle town has thrust it to the forefront of global efforts to find a cure for the debilitating malady.

Next spring, 100 residents of this region in northwestern Colombia who are known to carry a mutant gene linked to the disease will begin taking a therapeutic drug produced by the U.S. biotechnology firm Genentech. The five-year clinical trial, called the Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative, will cost $100 million. The effort is backed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and includes UCLA.

What sets this drug trial apart is that the patients, most of them in their 30s, will begin treatment long before they show symptoms of Alzheimer's. Researchers hope the drug will prevent its onset by blocking or slowing the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain that are associated with the devastating illness.

Because of a rare genetic predisposition among interrelated families, scores of residents here and in surrounding towns are getting Alzheimer's by their late 40s, about 15 years ahead of the norm. The cases can be traced to a "founder effect": a common ancestor's "misspelled" gene, passed down over generations, that makes developing Alzheimer's a virtual certainty.

"It's a heavy burden for the relatives when the victims have to stop working and raising their children at such an early age," said Carlos Orrego, administrator at San Juan de Dios Hospital, Yarumal's biggest. "For the families, the burden can last a very long time."

But the tragic circumstances also make this community an ideal place to test the Genentech drug, called crenezumab, which attacks beta amyloids and prevents them from becoming toxic.

Dr. Francisco Lopera, a co-manager of the trial and a neurologist at the University of Antioquia medical school in Medellin, 80 miles south of here, said it's the first test of its kind to be carried out on apparently healthy people. Lopera confirmed the genetic link to Alzheimer's cases here in the 1980s.

"Anti-amyloid drugs have been used before, but they have failed because they have been taken by patients already suffering from dementia ? in other words, too late," Lopera said. "We are optimistic. We aren't sure it will prevent the disease, but it could delay it for many years, and that's important."

A hundred carriers of the mutant gene will take the drug over five years, and 100 carriers will take a placebo, as will 100 at-risk people who do not have the mutant gene.

A "branch study" also will be conducted at UCLA's Geffen School of Medicine, where researchers have discovered a similar genetic disposition among members of an extended family from Jalisco state in Mexico. As many as 30 who have immigrated to Southern California could take part, neurology professor Dr. John Ringman said.

"It's an exciting and wise investment by the U.S. government in the cutting edge of Alzheimer's research," Ringman said. UCLA is looking for more at-risk patients to participate.

As many as 150 other U.S. patients who are Alzheimer's "mutation carriers" will take part in the trial at a dozen sites, said Dr. Eric Reiman of the Banner Alzheimer's Institute in Phoenix and a co-leader of the project. The inclusion of American patients is important so that Colombians don't feel exploited, he said.

"We think it's important to share benefits and risks with families in the United States," Reiman said.

The Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative is the "cornerstone of the U.S. government's national plan to attack Alzheimer's disease," he said.

The high-stakes research project reflects the growing health threat that Alzheimer's represents. An estimated 5.4 million Americans suffer from the disease, including 1 in 8 Americans older than 65. The percentage will grow in coming years as the population ages.

The cost of treatment and caregiving for Alzheimer's patients is soaring past $200 billion a year, according to the Alzheimer's Assn., providing ample incentive for the government to help find a cure.

To track the drug's progress in inhibiting plaques, patients will receive intravenous injections of a lightly radioactive imaging agent that will bind to amyloids floating in the fluid surrounding the brain. Patients will then undergo periodic brain scans to see whether the amyloid plaques are forming.

Genentech, which spent five years developing crenezumab, is shouldering $65 million of the study's $100-million cost. The NIH and the Banner Alzheimer's Institute are financing the balance.

Richard Scheller, an executive vice president of Genentech, said crenezumab has proved effective in blocking Alzheimer's-like symptoms in laboratory mice.

The trial could also prove or disprove the hypothesis of many researchers that amyloids are at the root of Alzheimer's, which is still a mystery.

"Amyloids are the target," UCLA's Ringman said. "A guaranteed slam-dunk target? No. But it's the best we've got."

Said Scheller: "I've been a scientist a long time and sometimes complicated experiments don't work. But based on encouraging results so far, I'm cautiously optimistic we can help these folks."

Lilly stops rheumatoid arthritis trial for lack of efficacy

(Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co said it will stop one of three late-stage trials of its rheumatoid arthritis drug tabalumab after an analysis showed that the trial was unlikely to be successful.

The trial was testing the drug in patients with moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis who were not responding adequately to methotrexate therapy, which is a standard rheumatoid arthritis treatment.

The decision was not based on safety concerns, and patients currently enrolled in other tabalumab rheumatoid arthritis studies will continue treatment, Lilly said.

However, the company said it would suspend enrolment of new patients in the rheumatoid arthritis program until additional analysis from other ongoing rheumatoid arthritis studies is completed in early 2013.

"The results of this study were unexpected given the data generated in earlier Phase II clinical studies of tabalumab," Lilly's vice president of autoimmune product development, Eiry Roberts, said.

The discontinuation of the study is expected to result in an after-tax charge of about 2 cents per share in the fourth quarter.

Late-stage trials testing the drug in lupus, an autoimmune disorder, will continue to enroll new patients, the company said.

ISI Group analyst Mark Schoenebaum said the drug's sales were estimated at around $250 million in 2018, noting that rheumatoid arthritis was a competitive market and expectations for the lupus market were low as well.

"If we wipe out all (tabalumab) sales from our model, our discounted cash flow drops about 50 cents, so the impact is small," Schoenebaum added.

The company's shares, which have gained more than 25 percent in the past twelve months, were down 1 percent at $48.50 in afternoon trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Lilly is working on another rheumatoid arthritis drug called baricitinib, which is being far more closely watched by the industry given its potential. The drug is also getting tested for psoriasis and diabetic nephropathy.

Baricitinib, currently in late-stage development, belongs to a new class of oral medicines called Jak inhibitors that aim to compete with the injected rheumatoid arthritis drugs that currently dominate the market with billions in sales.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. Jak inhibitors block enzymes believed to be involved in the inflammatory process.

Pfizer Inc was the first company to bring one of these new drugs to market with the U.S. approval of tofacitinib, which will be sold under the brand name Xeljanz. It was launched last month.

Another autoimmune disorder drug in Lilly's pipeline is ixekizumab ? being tested for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

New Device Could Help In Battle Against Breast Cancer ? CBS ...

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ? There could be a breakthrough in the fight against breast cancer.

A new device may help diagnose a common condition after having breast cancer surgery before it becomes a major problem.

Lymph is a clear fluid that drains from the body?s tissues and organs. It contains mostly protein and infection fighting blood cells and it is filtered through lymph nodes.

A swelling called lymphedema can happen if surgery or radiation treatment affects the lymph nodes and vessels. While it?s not life-threatening, it can have a major impact on your quality of life.

Mirtha Richardson is a breast cancer survivor. She underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation earlier this year.

?The emotional roller coaster was unbelievable. But, I did well post-operatively. I did very well,? Richardson said.

However, in the months even years after surgery, patients like Richardson still have to worry about developing a condition called lymphedema.

Fluid builds up in the arm after lymph nodes are removed, which restricts motion and causes painful swelling that can be extreme and very noticeable.

Now, doctors at Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care in New York are testing a new device that could pick up early signs of the condition.

The L-Dex uses pads like those used with an EKG. Then, a weak electrical current goes through the arm and measures any increases in fluid.

?The same current you would feel and perceive if you held a double-a battery between two fingers, so it?s truly minimal and it?s imperceptible,? Dr. Lisa Wiechmann said.

If the L-Dex shows there is extra fluid, doctors can begin early treatments, including massage therapy or compression sleeves to keep the condition under control.

Richardson hasn?t show any signs of lymphedema so far.

?I just want to be able to catch it on time. That?s my main concern, be able to catch things on time,? Richardson said.

As part of the study, she?ll be monitored for the next three years.

Currently, doctors use a tape measure to see if there are any changes in the arm after surgery.

Foreclosure Discounts : States To Find The Best Foreclosure Bargains

Foreclosure Discount by State, QE 2012

Buying a foreclosed home can be a terrific way to get a "deal". Foreclosed homes typically sell at steep discounts as compared to comparable homes not in foreclosure.

In its latest quarterly report, foreclosure-tracker RealtyTrac shows the states in which foreclosed homes are most deeply discounted.

For real estate investors and first-time buyers, RealtyTrac's data is especially useful.

Click here to see today's mortgage rates.

Foreclosures : 1 In 5 Home Sales Nationwide

Foreclosure-related home sales accounted for 19% of home resales between July-September 2012, according to RealtyTrac's latest?quarterly report. This represents?roughly no change from the quarter prior.

There were 193,000 homes sold in some stage of foreclosure last quarter.

The three stages of foreclosures are Notice of Default, Scheduled Auction, and Bank Repossessions. The former two are known as "pre-foreclosure". The latter is the actual foreclosure event. In Q3 2012, for the first time since five years, the number of homes sold in pre-foreclosure outnumbered those sold by banks.

The average price of a pre-foreclosure home was 27 percent lower than a non-foreclosure residential property last quarter. ?These homes required an average of 359 days to sell after beginning the foreclosure process.

Bank-owned homes, by contrast, sold for an average 38% discount over non-foreclosure homes and required 186 days to sell, on average, after the original date of foreclosure.

Connecticut Leads Foreclosure Discounts

Foreclosure discounts -- like most things in real estate -- are a local phenomenon. Depending on where you live, or where you buy, your discount for buying a distressed home will vary.

Last quarter, the eastern seaboard was the best place to get a foreclosed-home discount. Of the top 10 states in terms of foreclosure discounts, six were located on the East Coast, north of Virginia.

Last quarter's Top 10 states for foreclosure discounts were :

  1. Connecticut : 46.97% discount over non-foreclosed hoe
  2. Massachusetts : 46.50% discount over non-foreclosed home
  3. Ohio : 45.16% discount over non-foreclosed home
  4. Illinois : 42.90% discount over non-foreclosed home
  5. Georgia : 42.38% discount over non-foreclosed home
  6. Maryland : 42.20% discount over non-foreclosed home
  7. Rhode Island : 42.02% discount over non-foreclosed home
  8. New Jersey : 41.06% discount over non-foreclosed home
  9. Kentucky : 40.55% discount over non-foreclosed home
  10. District of Columbia : 40.16% discount over non-foreclosed home

Interestingly, however, of the three states in which foreclosure sales were most prevalent, none appeared on the "biggest discount list".

In those three states -- Georgia, California, and Arizona -- foreclosure sales accounted for 38%, 36% and 34% of all home resales in Q3 2012.

Buying Foreclosures? Get Pre-Approved.

For buyers of foreclosed homes, it's helpful to have a mortgage pre-approval before making a bid. The foreclosure purchase process can move quickly at times, and it's often good to know you'll be approved for the home for which you're bidding.

This is as true for first-time home buyers using the 3.5% downpayment program via an FHA mortgage as it is for real estate investors planning to use the 5-10 Properties Program. Properties in foreclosure and pre-foreclosure require quick action.

Inside David Lynch's Paris art-studio hideaway

PARIS (Reuters) - Behind the doors of a 19th-century printworks in south-central Paris, filmmaker and painter-by-training David Lynch takes a cigarette break after hours of etching abstract shapes and twisted limbs onto stone and wood.

Although best known for dark, surreal movies such as "Eraserhead", "Blue Velvet" and "Mulholland Drive", Lynch was an artist before he began filmmaking and since 2007 has been using the Idem workshop as his studio in Paris, creating some 170 lithographs and engravings.

As three workshop staff clamber onto one of the six giant mechanical presses to print up a fresh design, Lynch - dressed in a blue apron and sporting his trademark white, bouffant hairdo - explains that there is something uniquely inspiring about the Parisian printworks.

"This is totally Parisian. In people's dream of Paris, this place would fit in that dream perfectly," the 66-year-old tells Reuters, speaking above the noise of the whirling cogs and hand-operated cranks that he says remind him of the twisted, industrial world of his debut feature film "Eraserhead".

"Everybody that comes to this place, they feel it...I can feel the past. I can feel the whole art of life going on here."

Artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and Miro all had their prints produced at the site, a two-floor workshop built in 1880 that is still in use today by artists including Lynch. Encircled by piles of engraving-stones and the odd stuffed toy panther, the presses can also print from digital files.

Lynch's prints - which he says he etches from scratch after "catching" an idea in his mind - vary from Keith Haring-esque red-and-white squiggles and doodles to ghostly Edvard Munch-like humans stranded in desolate landscapes, with titles like "Things In Air Over City" or "Oh, A Bad Dream Comes".

They seem to combine the black-and-white, nightmarish imagery of "Eraserhead" and "The Elephant Man" with the abstract, surreal narratives of Lynch's last two movies, 2001's "Mulholland Drive" and 2006's "Inland Empire".

Lynch has explored other media over the past decade, creating a series of animated shorts posted online called "Dumbland", directing a Duran Duran concert streamed on YouTube and even recording his own solo album called "Crazy Clown Time".

He has even adapted his trademark palette of dark tones and surreal shapes to French tastes, designing a limited edition of Dom Perignon champagne bottles as well as an underground nightclub in the center of Paris called "Silencio".

Despite his obvious enthusiasm for trying out new things, Lynch's affection for Paris comes from its protection of tradition.

"I like the way the French people live. They protect the arts more than any other country," he says. "Here, almost every avenue of life is like an art form."

In a seemingly upside-down world where governments and bankers are suffering from the financial crisis but where big-name artists are fetching higher prices than ever before, Lynch says that he can still separate the urge to make money from the urge to make art.

"It's like Hollywood versus the art way," he says. "I love money for getting things to work and to live. But it's not the reason in my mind to make a film or to make anything."

Asked what his next move is going to be, Lynch says he will continue to work on music and art but adds that there is a movie idea also in the pipeline.

"Music and painting and maybe cinema, but we'll have to wait and see," he says. "Maybe it's going to happen but you need to be deeply in love and, you know...I'm falling in love."
