Chiseled 'Magic Mike' hunk shows off stripper moves

TODAY

By Jillian Eugenios

Joe Manganiello, best known for his role as a werewolf in the HBO series "True Blood," appears in the upcoming movie "Magic Mike," playing a stripper named Big Dick Ritchie.?

He gave a sneak peek of a few quick stripper moves as he entered the studio, and Kathie Lee and Hoda were left wanting. ?That?s it?? KLG asked. ?There has to be more,? Hoda said.?

?We had our cash ready and everything,? said Kathie Lee, counting out her dollar bills. ?Show us, big boy.??

Ever the good sport, Manganiello took the ladies through a brief demo. He first showed off a top-to-bottom body roll and then a bottom-to-top body roll. ?Stripping is very basic,? he said. ?There are only a few moves.???

TODAY

He said one of the best parts of making the movie was that ?you?re basically having about 200 female extras scream, claw, grab, body cavity search.? For women, going to a strip club is just about trying to make a girl blush in front of her friends, he said, adding that he was happy to take that on as a mission, and that at the end of the day, it?s all about fun. ?You can?t really take yourself too seriously with your American flag thong and your sparkler.??

Would you go to a ladies strip club?

TODAY.com contributor Jillian Eugenios thinks there has to be more to stripping than just two moves. She would like to see Joe go through a few more examples.

Google's Jelly Bean cup runeth over, kill grass in the process

Happy Google I/O week! Why not celebrate with a giant jelly bean or 12? The search giant clearly has some big, colorful plans for later this week, including, perhaps, another entry in its delicious parade of mobile operating system dessert foods. The above statue was spotted and posted to the Google Developers page on Google+, and it surely amounts to more than just a belated Easter celebration.

A New Chapter For Yahoo Music: A Deal With Spotify, Replacing Rhapsody

yahoo-logoHere's an interesting twist for Yahoo, the beleaguered internet company, and Spotify, the upstart streaming music service that is taking the market by storm: today the two have announced a global deal, in which Yahoo will integrate and promote Spotify's music service on the Yahoo Media network; and Spotify will get a Yahoo app on its platform. The move shows how Spotify is teaming up with a big, old-school internet player in an effort to ramp up its user numbers, and how Yahoo is looking to new blood to rejuvenate itself. But it is also a big blow for Rhapsody, which Spotify will now be replacing as Yahoo's music streaming partner, a spokesperson has confirmed to TechCrunch. The deal will see Spotify first rolling out to Yahoo Music. Later it will also start appearing in other verticals within the media network, including Yahoo Movies and omg!, says Yahoo. That represents a much wider-ranging agreement than the one Rhapsody had with Yahoo since 2008.

Know your BMI: Docs urged to screen for obesity

Graphic shows the projected percentage of obese and very obese Americans

Graphic shows the projected percentage of obese and very obese Americans

(AP) ? Chances are you know your blood pressure. What about your BMI?

Body mass index signals if you're overweight, obese or just right considering your height. Some doctors have begun calling it a vital sign, as crucial to monitor as blood pressure.

But apparently not enough doctors check: A government panel renewed a call Monday for every adult to be screened for obesity during checkups, suggesting more physicians should be routinely calculating their patients' BMIs.

And when someone crosses the line into obesity, the doctor needs to do more than mention a diet. It's time to refer those patients for intensive nutrition-and-fitness help, say the guidelines issued by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

Don't assume your weight's OK if the doctor doesn't bring it up.

Patients "should be asking what their BMI is, and tracking that over time," says task force member Dr. David Grossman, medical director for preventive care at the Group Health Cooperative in Seattle.

By the numbers: A normal BMI is less than 25. Obesity begins at 30. In between is considered overweight. To calculate yours: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/.

The advice sounds like a no-brainer, considering the national anxiety about our growing waistlines. Two-thirds of adults are either overweight or obese. Some 17 percent of children and teens are obese, on the road to diabetes, heart disease and other ailments before they're even grown.

The task force has recommended adult obesity screening previously, and similar guidelines urge tracking whether youngsters are putting on too many pounds.

Yet BMI remains a mystery for many people. A 2010 survey of members of the American Academy of Family Physicians found up to 40 percent of those primary care doctors were computing their patients' BMIs. Surveys show only about a third of obese patients recall their doctor counseling them about weight loss, even though people whose doctors discuss the problem are more likely to do something about it.

Doctors can struggle with the pounds, too, and Johns Hopkins University researchers recently reported that overweight physicians were less likely than skinnier ones to advise their patients about weight loss.

Why the reluctance? One reason: Few doctors are trained to treat obesity, they're discouraged by yo-yo dieting but they don't know what to advise, says Dr. Glen Stream, president of the physicians' group. His Spokane, Wash., practice uses electronic medical records that automatically calculate BMI when a patient's height and weight is entered.

"Our American culture is always looking for an easy fix, a pill for every problem," Stream says. "The updated recommendation is important because it makes clear exactly what doctors should do to help."

In Monday's Annals of Internal Medicine, the task force concluded high-intensity behavioral interventions are the best non-surgical advice for the obese, citing insufficient evidence about lasting effects from weight-loss medications.

The task force's Grossman says a good program:

?Includes 12 to 26 face-to-face meetings over a year, most in the first few months.

?Makes patients set realistic weight-loss goals. Losing just 5 percent of your initial weight ? 10 pounds for a 200-pound person ? can significantly improve health.

?Analyzes what blocks each patient from reaching those goals. Do they eat high-calorie comfort foods to deal with depression? Spend too much time at a desk job?

?Tailors ways to help people integrate physical activity into their daily routine.

?Requires self-monitoring, such as a food diary or a pedometer to track activity.

Last year, Medicare started paying primary care doctors for obesity screening and weight-loss counseling for seniors for a year, including weekly meetings for the first month.

But many insurance companies don't pay for all the suggested interventions, and comprehensive programs aren't available everywhere, says Dr. Scott Kahan of George Washington University and the STOP Obesity Alliance. He runs a clinic that provides a medical, psychological and nutritional evaluation before tailoring a plan. In other programs, primary care doctors may offer some counseling and send patients to nutritionists or other specialists for extra help.

Another problem: "Doctors tend to shoo away people who have obesity. They say, 'Don't come back to me and tell me your back hurts or you have acid reflux or high cholesterol until you will do something about it,'" laments Kahan, who is teaching medical school students to motivate patients.

What about the overweight? The task force said more study is needed on how best to help them.

But in Reno, Nev., Dr. Andy Pasternak calculates BMI for every patient at his family medicine practice ? and particularly targets the overweight in their 40s and younger for fitness counseling. He says if they wait until they're heavier or older to get active, arthritis exacerbated by the pounds will be another barrier.

Patients seldom know what their BMI should be, but "at least twice a day people say, 'What should be my optimal weight?'" Pasternak says.

He thinks saying to lose 60 pounds is too discouraging: "What I try to get them to focus on is: How much are you working out? How many servings of vegetables do you get a day?"

Sandusky lawyers may use TV tape error in appeal

(Reuters) - Lawyers for Jerry Sandusky sought a mistrial before his conviction for child sex abuse on the grounds that prosecutors showed jurors an inaccurate version of a bombshell NBC News interview with the former football coach, and the mistake may now form part of the basis for an appeal.

In response to a subpoena, NBC News turned over three versions of Bob Costas' NBC News interview with Sandusky, which aired last November on different NBC shows.

One of those versions, which was broadcast on the 'Today' show, contained an erroneous repetition of a key question and answer - about whether Sandusky was sexually attracted to young boys, Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania attorney general said on Sunday.

The repetition, Sandusky's lawyers contend, made it appear to jurors that he was stonewalling.

"It wasn't noticed by (NBC News), it wasn't noticed by us, but it became obvious when it played in court," Frederiksen told Reuters.

NBC News spokeswoman Amy Lynn confirmed this account on Sunday.

SANDUSKY FACES 400-YEAR SENTENCE

On Friday, a jury in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, convicted Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, of 45 counts of child sex abuse and child endangerment. Sandusky, 68, is expected to be sentenced to more than 400 years in prison.

Sandusky attorney Joe Amendola said NBC's error would form part of the basis for an appeal. "Oh my goodness, yes," he said, when asked about whether it could be used in an appeal.

The mistrial request was denied by Judge John Cleland, who sought to remedy the situation by providing the jury with an accurate transcript of the exchange, another Sandusky attorney Karl Rominger said.

It's the second time in a matter of months that an error in a ?Today' show broadcast has put the morning program at the center of a national criminal trial. In April, 'Today' aired a misleadingly edited phone call between the police and the man who shot Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

The Sandusky case has rocked the world of U.S. elite college sports and led to the firing of the university's president and Joe Paterno, a College Football Hall of Fame member who won more games as head coach than any other Division I coach. Paterno died of lung cancer in January, five months to the day before the verdict against his long-time assistant was handed down.

Amendola said another basis for a future appeal could be a request he and Rominger made to resign from the case at the start of jury selection because the lawyers didn't feel they were given enough time between their client's arrest in November and the June trial date. He said the request was denied by Judge Cleland.

UNDERAGE BOYS

In the Sandusky interview with NBC, Costas asks, "Are you sexually attracted to young boys, to underage boys?" according to an NBC News transcript.

Sandusky responded, "Am I sexually attracted to underage boys?"

But in the "Today" version, which was played for jurors and is still available on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb49dXT_44M), the exchange was repeated.

The interview was originally aired correctly on NBC News' new magazine show, ?Rock Center' on November 14. The erroneous version that repeated the exchange aired the following morning on ?Today.'

In a statement, NBC's Lynn said: "Under subpoena, NBC News turned over three versions of the Costas interview to prosecutors, including the 'Today' version with the error in it. Prosecutors used the 'Today' version, not realizing it included a technical glitch, and played it for the jury.

"After court that day, NBC News executives had a series of discussion with the prosecutors, and after some internal investigation were able to determine that the glitch originated on 'Today.' NBC News executives explained the situation to the court, and Judge Cleland sought to remedy the situation by giving the jury instructions to regard only a transcript of the full interview that was subsequently provided to them, not any audio that was played for them by prosecutors."

"EMBARRASSING"

A source on the prosecution team acknowledged that prosecutors played the ?Today' version, which contained the error, without reviewing it carefully beforehand.

"Was it embarrassing?" the source asked. "It was certainly embarrassing. Was it a mistake? It was clearly a mistake." The source also said NBC News executives expressed regret to the court.

"Did they say, ?I'm sorry?' I can't recall those exact words,'' the source said. "Were they apologetic? Yes."

In the incident in April, ?Today' aired a misleadingly edited tape of a call to police from George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot Trayvon Martin. That edit made it appear that Zimmerman told police that Martin was black without being prompted. In fact, Zimmerman did so only when responding to a question posed by a dispatcher.

Several ?Today' staffers were disciplined over that incident, NBC News president Steve Capus said at the time. Network sources told Reuters a Miami-based ?Today' producer was fired.

Official-looking pics of the T-Mobile-branded Galaxy Note

T-Mobile Galaxy Note

We've seen the blurry-cam and unofficial pictures leak out of a Galaxy Note carrying T-Mobile branding, but the folks over at CellPhone Signal got their hands on what they're calling official images. Not a lot of other details have leaked out, but the few that have are pretty tasty -- the T-mobile version will come in Navy Blue, run Ice Cream Sandwich (as we saw in the previous leak), and have HSPA+ enabled on 850/1900 MHz bands along with standard AWS bands. T-Mobile is slowly shifting radio frequencies for HSPA+, and as a bonus it means it should work on AT&T once factory SIM unlocked with no rooting or fiddling

The also tell us to expect to see it for sale on July 11, so keep your eyes peeled for more info soon.

Marc Chardon and Hal Williams: The Imperfect Storm: Define by Results (Series Post 3)

In our initial blog post, we identified five key shifts affecting the environment for nonprofits that have co-mingled with the economy to create the potential for continued rough times. The last post covered Shift #1: Nonprofits Need to Engage Their Donors. In this post, we'll explore how nonprofits need to change how they're telling their stories.

Shift #2: Nonprofits need to define themselves by their results

When you look at the websites of many nonprofits, as we do a lot, it's pretty easy to see that these organizations help a lot of people in need. Ironically, what you can't tell is just how many of these people tangibly improved their lives as a result of what the nonprofits did for them. One website, speaking of its work mentoring young kids, might give you numbers of how many people were matched up through their programs. That's pretty typical. But having a mentor is not the same as getting to grade level in reading, nor is it a promise that a child will be successful in some new way. Just like signing up for a workshop doesn't guarantee that by the end you'll have lost weight or stopped smoking.

Why do we make this point? Because we think nonprofits should cut to the chase and focus on achievement.

The traditional approach to outcomes muddies as much as it tries to clarify how nonprofits show the human gains they achieve. Moving to a clear report card of results, published annually, puts nonprofits in the outcome business, which is where they should be. But many nonprofits are running on the hamster wheel, trying to please funders who ask for a variety of different measurements of success, many of which don't move the organization toward a clear picture of true results. This is progress going in the wrong direction. Why?

First, nonprofits seeking grants get wrapped up trying to remember and repeat the language the funder uses. Is it a goal, an outcome, a result, a benefit or a target? And to show progress, are they establishing a benchmark, an indicator or a milestone? Given that one funder's benchmark is another's indicator, the nonprofit has to keep learning new terms just to comply with the language requirement. They'll do it because they want the money, not because it is essential to their mission, their work. What's even more serious is how outcomes have become their own form of compliance. Instead of looking for the core logic of a program, nonprofits want to make sure they have the right words in the right columns on the chart. They perfect the document rather than the program.

There are nonprofits out there that are changing the way "things are done" in the world of outcomes. If you know of one that has nailed this concept of results, a trailblazer, one that can teach us all, please share. Championing success is one way we will help others follow suit. Next time, we'll introduce Shift #3: Nonprofits need to ride for their brand.

Find the Best Roofing Contractor in Nashville - IdeaMarketers.com

Replacing your roof is extremely expensive. You need to work with a roofing contractor in Nashville who will do the job right. Home improvement is ripe with fly-by-night operations that will leave you stranded with bad work and no legitimate warranty to fall back on. Follow these tips to find the best professional for your next job:

Ask About Insurance

Professional home repair outfits have insurance to cover their health and safety on the job, as well as the value of your home. They've been around long enough to know that mistakes happen to even the best people. Someone can fall through your roof, slip and get hurt or have a reaction to a chemical application. A certificate of insurance proves to you that the business you're using for roof repairs will cover these kinds of injuries and accidents. Further, if someone dents your siding or breaks a window, you know they'll be able to cover the bill.

How Long Have They Been Known by Their Current Name

This is a tricky question that gets right to the heart of reputation. A roofing contractor in Nashville may have been in business for 20 years, but if he's changed his business name 20 times it's a sign of a problem. Professional, trusted workers have built their business on a good reputation and protect that by preserving their good name.

Look for Factory Training

Most roofing job complaints boil down to bad training. In busy seasons, technicians can be rushed through the process and wind up without the skills to do a quality job. You can rest assured that a roofing contractor in Nashville that has gone through this intense process won't make amateur mistakes on your home.

References

Talking to previous clients can give you a very positive outlook on a business. They won't refer you to someone who will tarnish their name, but most people won't openly criticize a business even when they've done a so-so job.

If you call references, make sure you ask them about the worst part of their experience. Questions like this demand a negative answer. While they may catch some people off-guard, they will also open the door for honest opinions.

Finding the best roofing contractor in Nashville shouldn't be so hard. Unfortunately, there are plenty of inexperienced people trying to cash in on a high-paying job. You must protect yourself by checking to see that the help you're using is professional. Following these tips could save you money, but most importantly, it can protect the investment you've made in your home.

If you need help finding a dependable roofing contractor in Nashville, contact H.E. Parmer Company. You can visit them at HEParmer.com.

Greece seeks to win Germany's respect at Euro 2012

GDANSK, Poland (AP) ? Now for the really important business between Greece and Germany: Soccer.

On Friday, thousands of fans from the two nations at opposite ends of the eurozone financial crisis converged on neutral Polish turf for a European Championship quarterfinal match.

For Greece fans, Friday's clash in rainy Gdansk inevitably mixes sports and politics, Euro 2012 and the euro currency.

They seek respect for their country after its humiliating economic collapse ? and the German government's role in imposing strict austerity measures as a condition of Greece getting ?240 billion ($300 billion) in bailout pledges.

"It's not good that sports and politics are together, but today we have no other choice," Greece fan Michalis Kalotrapesis said, wearing a white national team shirt and tracksuit top. "We are playing for our country and for our image in Europe and all over the world."

Kalotrapesis, and three Greek friends who now live in Germany have driven through the night to support their native nation here.

Their pride in performing what they see as a patriotic duty fits into Greece's favored national narrative: In soccer as in finance, Germany is the traditional power and Greece the spirited underdog.

"We are a little bit crazy, but it's the Greek mentality," said Nikos Barzas, pointing out the bloodshot eyes of the group's designated driver, Georgios Kotiniotis.

They left Gifhorn, near Wolfsburg, at midnight with 750 kilometers (about 465 miles) of road ahead of them. In a city center cafe, the first coffees of the day were helping them bridge the 10 hours to kickoff.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's journey to Gdansk will surely be more comfortable. Merkel will attend the match after morning economic meetings in Italy that were brought forward to help fulfill her role as the supposed lucky charm of the national team.

Barzas is glad she is coming ? to further spur the team and 5,000 Greece fans expected to attend the match.

"(The players will) fight a little bit more because (they want) to beat Angela Merkel. (It would be) a little bit of a small kick in Germany's (backside)," he said.

About 15,000 Germans were expected to go to the match, according to the Football Supporters Europe group. Many of the Germans were arriving at Gdansk's main train station, where the scalpers' asking price was ?200 (about $250) for a ticket with a face value of ?75 ($95). There didn't appear to be any Greek fans in the market for them.

Ticket sellers far outnumbered buyers also on the busy tourist street, Dluga. Cafes in the narrow cobbled street were occupied by either camp of genial beer-drinking fans.

As the street filled up and drinks flowed, a four-meter long German flag had claimed the iron fence surrounding the ornate Neptune's fountain. Nearby, Greek fans waving an even larger flag occupied the steps leading up the main town hall. On the Motlawa river bank, fans stopped to get their faces painted in team colors, with accordions being played in the background.

Confident German fans could plan ahead of Euro 2012 for a likely quarterfinal in Gdansk. Fans from the Greek Diaspora knew only last Saturday where to head after an upset win over Russia.

"I was actually happy for them (the Greeks) that they finally had something to celebrate," said Stefan Leidig, a Germany fan from Koblenz. "Besides, I hope that they will manage to get out of the crisis at one point."

Two days after being sworn into office, the prime minister of Greece's new conservative-led coalition government is staying at home to work.

Antonis Samaras, a Harvard-educated former finance minister, is better employed stabilizing the country after a tense election last weekend than cheerleading at a soccer match, fan Thomas Nikolopulos said.

"I'm glad they are at home," said Nikolopulos, who arrived with his son Daniel in Gdansk on a Friday morning flight from London.

Before Samaras met with lawmakers in Athens on Friday afternoon, he could read headlines fueling national wishes to repel German policy on the field: "Bankrupt Them!" read Greek paper SportDay, as Derby News repeated the Spartan motto "Come and Get it."

In Germany, the best-selling daily Bild led with: "Bye bye Greece; we can't rescue you today."

Nikolopulos, who is originally from Athens, said the feeling back home is that "Germany has put them in the corner" over the euro currency crisis.

"This is Greece's opportunity to stand up and try to go back to being historical wonders," he said, with a blue-and-white striped national flag draped across his shoulders.

Greece fans takes faith in their team's surprise run to be Euro 2004 champion, founded on the same solid defense and dogged resistance shown by the current team in Poland.

For three-time European champion Germany, the match seems more routine ? aiming for its fourth straight semifinal at each World Cup and Euro since Greece's golden year.

"For me, it's a normal football match," said German fan Klaus Lehmkuhl, a technical consultant from Muenster. "I don't think the politics is important for the German team."

Still, some off-field tensions are expected when the German national anthem is played minutes before kickoff. And if images of Merkel sitting next to UEFA President Michel Platini in the VIP seats are shown on the stadium giant screens?

"There will be massive boos. I can't see there not being some," said Yiannis Televantibes, a real estate agent from London. "But there's no problem between the fans."

In Berlin, a German deputy government spokesman was peppered with questions about the match and asked whether, in view of the eurozone crisis, Merkel would feel the need to tone down any goal celebrations.

"It's hard to assess that in advance," Georg Streiter said. "I think it depends a bit on how the game goes, but I think you will see that she is glad if there's a goal on the right side."

Streiter also shrugged off a question as to whether Merkel would consider herself partly responsible if she doesn't bring luck to the team and German loses.

"I think you would be loading up the chancellor, who already has plenty of packages to carry, with an unjustified package," he said. "She's a spectator."

German business optimism fades as crisis bites

(AP Photo/Frank Augstein)

(AP) ? A key measure of German business optimism fell in June, another signal that the financial crisis could slow Europe's biggest economy in coming months and complicate the continent's effort to dig out of debt.

The Ifo institute index published Friday fell to 105.3 points in June from 106.9 the month before, worse than market analysts' expectations for a dip to 105.6. It was the second month in a row that the index has fallen.

Germany's export-oriented economy has been doing better than many others in Europe and grew 0.5 percent in the first quarter from the quarter before. But the survey suggests that things could get more difficult in coming months. Earlier this week, a separate survey of manufacturing activity indicated that key part of the economy is slowing.

Weaker economic growth could undermine Germany's financial ability and the willingness of its public ? already grudging ? to help rescue debt-troubled members in the 17-country eurozone. Germany is the biggest backer of bailout efforts because of its size.

The eurozone as a whole is lagging and expected to shrink 0.3 percent this year according to the European Union's executive commission. Banks, key providers of credit to the economy, are in trouble from bad real estate loans and losses on government bonds. Government efforts to quickly reduce deficits are also slowing many economies ? Germany's biggest trade partners are other eurozone countries.

Spain is struggling to avoid needing a bailout, after asking for ?100 billion ($127 billion) in loan aid from other countries to bail out its banks. Italy is also under pressure from high borrowing costs. Meanwhile, Greece is deeply in debt even after ?107 billion in forgiveness from creditors and faces uncertainty over whether it can stay in the euro.

Analyst Carsten Brzeski at ING said the German economy still benefitted from low unemployment and wage increases for workers. But he wrote in a note to investors that "the Germany economy is clearly slowing down and a contraction ... in the second quarter looks possible."

"With austerity-driven slowdowns coming now also to more other core eurozone cuntries, an obvious cooling of the Chinese economy and a still not very dynamic U.S. recovery, order books are emptying quickly and companies have started to reduce stocks."

Andreas Rees, chief Germany economist at UniCredit, said fear of trouble from the crisis could keep German companies from investing in new production, hurting the economy. "The big unknown quantity is the psychological effect related to the eurozone crisis and financial turmoil," he said.

Nonetheless, Germany has received some benefits from the crisis. The turmoil has lowered the euro's exchange rate, making German exports cheaper for foreign customers. Demand for German government bonds as a safe haven for investor money has driven government borrowing costs down. Those low rates also influence the rates companies pay for credit, meaning lower costs and cheaper credit for investment.

Big Brother is watching Facebook and Twitter

The US government wants to monitor activity on social networks to get hints of political unrest

SATIRICAL newspaper The Onion recently described Facebook as a project of the Central Intelligence Agency. "After years of secretly monitoring the public, we were astounded," a fictional agency deputy director told Congress. He was happy that Facebook users voluntarily post "alphabetized lists of all their friends" and "even status updates about what they were doing moment to moment". It is, he concluded, "truly a dream come true for the CIA".

The scenario is not that far from the truth. Facebook has close to a billion users, many of whom post daily updates on their thoughts and feelings. The same thing happens on Twitter. Foursquare users share information about their location. Commentators on news sites express opinions and outrage. And, as a New Scientist review of procurement requests shows, the US government is keen to take advantage of what amounts to a society of self-surveillance.

In a way, they are behind the curve - marketing firms already monitor social networks to gauge public reaction to product launches. And online chatter can be analysed to forecast election results, for example. US federal agencies want to harness these techniques in an attempt to gauge overseas opinion about America, or even get hints on how to head off terrorist activity.

With these aims in mind, officials at the Department of State issued a procurement notice on 1 June asking software developers to submit bids for a contract to supply tools that provide "deep analysis of topics, conversations, networks, and influencers of the global social web". These tools will analyse conversations taking place in at least seven foreign languages, including Chinese and Arabic.

Once the bids are in, the software systems will undergo a six-month trial in which they will examine online reaction to a specific event, such as a talk given by a US ambassador.

The military is even further along with such plans. In 2007, the US air force awarded defence giant Lockheed Martin a $27 million contract to develop the Web Information Spread Data Operations Module, or WISDOM, which analyses posts made to news forums, blogs and social media. Military analysts are already using it to monitor Central and South America and the Pacific region. Lockheed Martin is now upgrading WISDOM with a $9 million contract from the navy, which wants to "understand the latest regional trends and sentiment and predict threats from groups and individuals".

Other departments have similar plans - the FBI is talking to software vendors, and the Department of Homeland Security already has a monitoring system up and running.

How might such monitoring affect our online behaviour?

Imagine reading an article about US government policies and then wanting to post an angry comment. Would you pause if you knew the government would collect and store your comment and username? "This prevents people from speaking their minds," says Ginger McCall of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington DC. "It quells dissent." One would hope government officials had such concerns in mind. It is difficult to say, however, because repeated attempts by New Scientist to obtain comments from the Department of State were met with silence.

(AP) ? A House committee is poised to vote on whether to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to turn over more Justice Department documents on a flawed gun-smuggling probe that resulted in hundreds of guns illicitly purchased in Arizona gun shops winding up in Mexico.

The likelihood of a contempt vote rose after Holder and Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., failed to reach agreement Tuesday in a 20-minute meeting at the Capitol.

Issa wanted the documents immediately. Holder told reporters he would not turn over documents on the gun-smuggling probe called Operation Fast and Furious unless Issa agreed to another congressional briefing on the Justice Department material. Holder wants an assurance from Issa that the transfer of the records would satisfy a subpoena from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which Issa heads.

"If we receive no documents, we'll go forward" with a contempt vote, Issa told reporters.

Holder says he is prepared to turn over documents detailing how the department arrived at the conclusion that federal agents engaged in a risky tactic called gun-walking. In February 2011, when the controversy over the law enforcement operation was first disclosed, the department denied that agents had engaged in gun-walking.

"It's a whole variety of material, and it's consistent with what we have already made available ? emails, documents of that nature ? that really go into the way in which the department handled itself from February of 2011 until December of 2011," Holder told reporters.

Ordinarily, such deliberative documents are off-limits to Congress. In Operation Fast and Furious, the Justice Department's initial incorrect denials are seen as providing justification for Congress' document demands.

Issa and the House Republican leadership have asked whether the department's initial denial in a Feb. 4, 2011, letter to Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, was part of a broader effort to obstruct a congressional investigation.

The material "pretty clearly demonstrates that there was no intention to mislead, to deceive," Holder told reporters.

"The attorney general has made an unprecedented offer to turn over documents that are part of the Department of Justice's internal deliberations and work product and to brief the committee on their contents," said Rep. Adam Schiff of California, one of the committee's Democrats and a former federal prosecutor. "Regrettably, Chairman Issa refuses to take yes for an answer."

"We have offered to make materials available ... to brief on those documents, to answer any questions that might come up with regard to the documents that we produced," the attorney general said.

"The ball's in their court," Holder said. "We made what we thought was an extraordinary offer."

Issa took a different view: "After this meeting I cannot say that I am optimistic" for avoiding a contempt vote.

Issa spokesman Frederick Hill said that at the meeting, "the attorney general indicated he would only be willing to produce a subset of documents that numbered fewer than 1,300 pages if the committee would first agree that the production of these documents would end the committee's investigation of the Justice Department."

Issa declined the offer.

In a letter to Issa on Tuesday night, Deputy Attorney General James Cole said "our offer would have provided the committee with unprecedented access to these documents, many of which are not covered by the committee's subpoenas in this matter."

It's still Bush's fault: the U.S. economy looks like it's losing jobs again

So says James Pethokoukis, the economic expert that Paul Krugman wishes he could be.
The private sector is not fine, as some extremely worrisome economic news today emphasizes.

The government?s April Job Opening and Labor Turnover report was, in the words of JPMorgan economists, ?soft, lending some credence to the view that the April-May slowing seen in the payroll report was real and not a statistical fluke.?

? The number of job openings in April fell 325,000 to 3.416 million. That?s the lowest level since November of last year.

? But here is the real red flag. Private job openings fell 282,000 ? the most since early 2009 ? to 3.080 million. Early 2009, if you recall, saw the economy just hemorrhaging jobs.

? One bright spot in this report in March was the rising in people quitting their jobs, showing some confidence in the economy. But that ?completely reversed itself in April.?

This comes on the heels of last month's report that the Labor Force Participation Rate is the lowest since 1981.

So if this administration isn't doing its best to implement The Cloward-Piven Strategy, it's doing a damn fine imitation.

Facebook to launch subscription billing for apps, transition from Credits to local in-game currency

Facebook will soon support subscription billing for apps on its platform, according to a post on the company?s developer blog. The company will also transition away from Credits to local currency ? dollars, pounds or yen, for example.

Subscriptions will launch to all developers in July, though Zynga and Kixeye are already testing the feature for their games. This change gives developers a way to charge users on a monthly basis, rather than relying on individual virtual goods purchases. The alternative model could help developers and Facebook better monetize. It could also be a start to getting non-game developers to try Facebook?s payment platform.

As our sister blog Inside Social Games explains, subscriptions?could lead players to spend more in games and also?makes Facebook a better option for developers of free-to-play browser-based massively multiplayer online role-playing games.

We?ve previously written about how the social network was likely to introduce subscriptions as a way to monetize non-game applications. Because Facebook Credits aren?t required for these apps, only a few developers use them. For example, some studios offer movie rentals for Facebook Credits. These companies might now consider testing a subscription model that gives users access to more movies or special features if they sign up for a multi-month package.?Facebook subscriptions will also support free trial periods, which could incentive users to sign up.

Other businesses built on Facebook, such as professional networking app BranchOut or news apps like Washington Post Social Reader, might find uses for subscriptions, however the social network?s 30 percent fee is likely to turn off many developers. For companies like Spotify and Netflix, which have to pay huge licensing fees to rights-holders, losing 30 percent simply isn?t an option unless they significantly increased their prices. But at higher price points, consumers might not decide to subscribe at all. [Update 6/19/12 2:08 p.m. PT - A screenshot of a sample subscription settings page on Facebook's developer site includes Spotify, MOG and RunKeeper as sample apps using subscriptions. It's unclear whether these are simply examples or actual developers in the beta program.]

Although the 30 percent fee is standard for app platforms like Apple and Android, it is far more than what online payments systems like PayPal charge. PayPal takes a 2.9 percent fee plus a $0.30-fee for each transaction. Facebook acknowledged in a regulatory filing that it might reduce its fee, but for now the 30 percent seems to stand.

Facebook, though, is in a unique position to streamline payments and offer developers useful data about who?s paying for subscriptions. If businesses can automatically gather information they would otherwise have to ask users for through forms, Facebook?s payments platform would be more attractive. Ease of implementation, increasing conversions and providing useful reporting are all areas the social network will need to improve as it expands its payments business.

The company first introduced what it called ?Pay with Facebook? in May 2009. That eventually got combined with the Credits program associated with virtual gifts that users could buy and post to each other?s profiles. In July 2011, Facebook made Credits mandatory for social games, leading payments and fees revenue to make up about 18 percent of the company?s revenue in its most recent quarter ? up from a 13 percent in Q1 2011. Only?15 million users ? fewer than 2 percent of total monthly active users ? paid for virtual goods on the platform in 2011.?Facebook has?helped individual game developers who wanted to implement a recurring pay cycle in the past, but for the most part, this hasn?t been an option until now.
